[SPOILERS] West Everett Estates bug

So following Jake's advice I went to West Everett Estates to clear out the muties, went down to the basement and dealt with the mutants there as well, however I couldn't pick up any ASAMs there! There are a bunch of ASAMs laying on the table, but I can only press "Activate" on them, I cannot pick them up (like I'm supposed to I think). My game also crashed the first time I approached the room with the ASAMs although it might not be related to SS2.

One of them should have had some in their inventory after death, but yeah, despite how Jake makes it sound like you are in for the fight of your life those ones in the basement are meant to be friendly enough to talk with.

Avoid to kill all what have to do with SS2.First try always to talk.SS2 is not the Vanilla game so there are some change and some enemy maybe is not hostile from the beginning or mean to Kill.In the worst chase and you get killed you reload a Save that is most of the time if you don't change it at the start of the Dungeons/Travel points. But is better to reload a Save from 2 Minutes ago then to need to go 30 Minutes or more back to fix and start the full quest new.

A problem is that you can find them long before being given the quest by Jake and being Super Mutants you shoot first, you don't try and talk to a Super Mutant, it is just not the way of the wasteland normally. As I didn't start my SS2 quest line until after I had been questing for awhile, in a previous game run through I messed up several of these quests finding them before I was supposed to. Not sure if it is feasible, could it be similar to Kellogg's home in DC, could there be a way some of these doors/quests be locked/inaccessible until you get the quest given to you.

In order to find the button under the desk in Kellogg's home, you have to be on the quest with Nick. If you get in Kellogg's home before starting the quest the button is not there to open the secret room. After killing them all (the Super Mutants) several times, thanks to this post I decided to talk to them and now have my chalk for ASAM vendor unlocked. Side note, in a previous game, I had acquired over 100 ASAMs from various vendors without even starting the SS2 quest line from the Stranger/Jake.

Very much this. In my own experience, chalk is way more scarce than ASAMs.

I think the problem a lot of people are having with this quest is the problem I have with most fan-written quests. Mod authors write quests for Fallout fans because they are Fallout fans. Basically they are all still writing quests for New Vegas, but we are ignoring the fact that Fallout 4 sales nearly doubled the sales of New Vegas. There are so many people playing this game who don't care (or know) about series lore or canon or all of the fan servicey references that mod authors like. They are playing Fallout 4 and in Fallout 4 friendly super mutants are very rare and the game takes extra care to hand hold you through meeting them so you won't be surprised that they are friendly.

I am a Fallout super nerd. I was into the series before Bethesda took over. I care way too much about lore and canon. I had no problem recognizing that the mutants were friendly. My wife however, who is more of an Average Fallout Fan™ that has mostly only played 3 & 4, immediately opened fire on them. Just something to consider now that Sim Settlements has transcended the realm of simple mods for nerds and is something more like an unofficial DLC.

Came here searching for something similar. The West Everett Estate quest is not very clear. I did it ONCE successfully but I killed them all. I was able to click the standing ASAM and turn on Jake's Frequency and he talked to me and said come on back (darlin... oh how I love that). Since I've had to restart several times due to the Where There's Smoke glitch, I have yet to successfully clear the Estate one again. I knew to wait till I had Jake's Frequency first, but this is the FIRST I'm hearing about talking to the SM in the first room. There is no indication about this at all. Eye opening. Gods I smell yet another start over. :(

Just finished Where There's Smoke again. Not sure if the glitch is not getting the dialog with Aiden after he shows up. I have had that, seems it is because of my use of See Through Scopes. I made sure to do a full save before the cut scene. With a gun with a See through scope on it I glitch out. When I try and holster it, the dialog pops up for a second then disappears. I reloaded the game, equipped a melee weapon and went in again. For whatever reason it switch me to a weapon in my #4 slot, a gun without a see through scope (Recon Scope on it). I was able to complete the sequence. When the fight starts I hot key to my big gun and find high ground as we fight it out. There is a quest marker in the middle of nowhere after the fight, I find and talk to Aiden after he leaves, I talk to Jake and then the quest completes. (Not sure if that helps). Also killing the Super Mutants at West Evererrt doesn't affect anything, just means you loose a vendor source for ASAMs and not get one box for free. It should not affect the rest of the quests (you don't even need to do it if you don't want to).

I have had that, seems it is because of my use of See Through Scopes.
Yeah, that's a known issue. Something to do with how STS works and how "in-game cutscenes" like that function. There's another issue with that quest separate from that, which is APPARENTLY fixed now as of version 1.0.8a - next "major patch" will likely be in a couple days.

OMG, See Through Scopes now? I didn't see that listed in the compatibility section. I guess I'll have to take that one out now. The weapon I use is the RU556 rifle, it comes with its own scopes, but maybe it's taking on the STS system? Bleh. This is too much. I'm still waiting for Jake to contact me though heh, I've restarted so many times I don't know what's going on. I have his radio channel, I know he called me back after doing the ASAMs last time, but for now, he's incognito. I really am lost ... so I just keep doing other quests. I'm almost 20 now and I'm still not getting Where There's Smoke. The save I went back to before getting that quest is taking longer to have him reach out to me for some reason.

After "Scavver's Delight" he's supposed to call you via your Pipboy Radio after a couple days, do "Well Well Well", then the same again another few days later for "Hub of the Problem", yeah. For some reason (that I haven't yet narrowed down) that next quest stage doesn't pop for some people under some circumstances - going to where he asks you to meet him for "Hub of the Problem" anyway seems to SOMETIMES work for SOME people though.

Just a note on see through scopes;
I help a LOT of people with CTD's and issues on reddit (over 153 times, literally since I started keeping track) and a lot of times it is see through scopes that is the issue in conjunction with either other mods, or the base game (rarely).

This happens a lot with some weapon mods or accessories that NPC's can equip - where they are not 100% compatible with all game elements, then when an npc with that gear goes through a game engine mechanic, it can fail or crash.

Also, for anyone else reading this thread - before making a "BUG" post, use the forum search feature - or check the FAQ in the wiki.
As most issues (perceived or actual) have been covered before.

OK according to pipboy I've done all three of those yaugie. Maybe I should pop by the hardware store. I really don't know where I was at this save because it was 10 hours before where I was when Where There's Smoke broke because I broke Jake haha, this is so insane I just have to laugh. I'll figure it out. Once the update comes tomorrow I'll probably just start again, my old brain can handle only so much confusion.

@pakman thanks for that info. Fortunately the RU556 I'm using is not in the leveled lists. Only my character uses it. So now I'm not sure if I have the STS problem or not. This was my main play save, but I suppose I'm turning it back into a test run. Hopefully tomorrow I can start again and have everything working. I will remove STS, reluctantly, to prevent any problems.

The questline for that sequence goes "Hub of the Problem" -> "The Coolest Cat" -> "Vim and Vigor" -> "New Plots on the Block" -> "Where There's Smoke". If it's not going back to Jake's Hardware Store, my next best bet would be it's either Vault 81 or THE RON.

The issue according to some reports (I have not used it personally, nor have I looked at the mod in the creation kit, so I cannot 100% confirm) can happen when an NPC has any gun with a scope that would be eligible for the scope mod.

I totally get starting over - I think I have done the first 10 levels about 100 times.
Best of luck in your game!

I didn't have a companion and Jake and Aiden are using the equipment supplied by the mod. I did not have to disable STS, just change to a weapon that did not have a STS scope installed on it. However, I am not sure why during the cut scene where we run into Aiden, the mod forces a weapon change on me from my melee (sword) to a pistol.

Thanks yaugieLC and pakman

I am tired, calling it a night. I will read up on what triggers the New Plots on the Block (love that by the way, cute. Except now I have the urge to listen to boy bands :D)

I'll try to get to Where There's Smoke tomorrow after I download the update. If all works well, maybe I'll just keep going, otherwise I'll start over. Tomorrow's a new day. I truly appreciate you guys being so helpful. I love this community so hard!
