Mod Managers for F04

Hail!
I just wanted to ask a simple question.
What Mod Managers do you folk use?
Right now, i'm using NMM, but to be honest, i really REALLY don't like it.
It's slow, some ppl say it sometimes skip scripts in the instalation/uninstallation, and on the overall, it's really slow with terrible U.I.

With that said, i know that M.O.2 project was continued by someone, not the creator, and that some ppl are using it, but that the new dev is not experienced enough to actually clean the code and finish M.O.2.

So, what are your experiences with?

My experience is we don't have a great mod manager for FO4 yet. I'm waiting cautiously for the new NMM to come out (whatever they're calling it, Vortex or what have you)

The thing about NMM is, it will teach you (no matter how much you cuss) how to install/uninstall mods manually. Which to be honest, really is a good thing to know. But overall, I like it.

MO2 is far superior to NMM. Sure it does not have all of the features working for FO4 yet. Sure it crashes every time you exit FO4. Sure it makes modding a slight pain in the azz in some instances (scripting) but all of these issues can be dealt with.

Let me sum it up this way. When I used NMM I would have to reinstall my game at least once every 3 months or so because it would get totally screwed up to the point it wouldn't even start. I have been using MO2 for almost a year with FO4 and have never had to reinstall my game one time and other than the FASE files and updates I loaded it is still exactly the same as they day I installed it. The virtual files system is the way to go. If the new NMM doesn't have it upon release I wont even consider using it.

The thing about NMM is the guy who created MO and MO2 is working on NMM now. So pick your poison.

Hmmm...
Gonna try switching for MO2 then, because gonna be honest, the Virtual File System is what i loved most about M.O!

I've been using mods, since the early years of Oblivion, so for a long time i keept using manual, instead of managers.
NMM, i used in for some time, but always felt that it were SO FREAKING SLOW.
Then, i discovered M.O and it's just like the best thing possible.
It gives the flexibility of manually arranging the folders, and better yet, the overwrite system is simple perfect.

I'm using NMM. Had some issues with it before, most of them were bugs that were fixed already, during 2017 I've been using it without any serious issues. Couple of times it wouldn't install bigger mod archives, though, but I managed to install them after retry. But I never experienced anything related to an issue of scripts not installing correctly or something like that — each time some mod would act abnormally, I would go to check the load order via LOOT tool, and it always made difference for me, making each mod work like it should.

There are so many problems with NMM failing to properly install or uninstall mods in the last 6+ months that I actually have a standard reply I've saved on a cloud drive for easy copy/paste.

My standard copy/paste response to this issue:

The latest versions of NMM (from the last 6+ months actually) are really bad about not properly installing and activating mods. Unfortunately they've also stopped supporting it while they work on a new one from scratch. I suggest either switching to a somewhat older, more stable version of NMM or switching to Mod Organizer 2 which has recently started receiving support again with a new developer.

0.61.21 is a decent stable version: https://github.com/Nexus-Mods/Nexus-Mod-Manager/releases
Mod Organizer 2: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/6194/?

Make sure you also followed the ini file instructions to enable mods, this also enables the game to be able to use loose files. It's easy to forget this step in a full re-install because you only have to do it once. I've forgotten myself. http://wiki.tesnexus.com/index.php/Fallout_4_Mod_Installation

Mod Organizer 2 is pretty stable and works well, it's what I use. The only issues Mod Organizer has is that it is a little more prone to crash when using external apps like FO4Edit, LOOT, and the Creation Kit. Thankfully though it's more annoying than showstopping. The crashing usually happens when exiting one of those programs and thankfully the crashing seems to happen after whatever changes you made were saved. Even more thankfully, since Le Presidente took over development the exit crashing with other apps has significantly reduced.

I have only tried NMM (except for some special programs for oblivion, I forget Their names atm) and so far it seems to work ok for fo4... Ive used it for over a year with fo4, skyrim and now nv

I used some other stuff with oblivion... There was this awesone save game editor that can adjust the games active mod list and sort automatically based on saves

It would also allow one to modify data in the save game afaicr

TBH the ability to dual wield in skyrim and using added scifi mods almost makes skyrim better than nv, fo4 and oblivion

If som settlements somehow could work with skyrim then it would pretty much be the ultimate game... Skyrim needs more scifi mods though ... And ability to cuztomize weapons, armor, clothes etc like fo4... And it would need xrecars from nv :)

Oh god I Hope dual weilding makes a comeback in fo5! :)

I certainly don't doubt everyone's issues with NMM, but I've NEVER had any significant problems over 2000+hours using it between fallout 4 and Skyrim SE. worst I've had is it not fully uninstalling a mod, maybe 2 times, and I've installed/installed at least hundreds of times. reinstalling and uninstalling always fixed the problem.

I have considered learning to use MO just for the fact of educating myself on modding in general, but I figure I'll wait until my game stops working as good as it does.

I'm actually about to do a clean install of the game for the first time ever, so I've been pretty lucky overall I guess

I use NMM. I've found that whenever I have to re-install something it's usually my fault. I've only had to do it once (so far knock on wood) with FA4. It was a texture problem. I am really bad about saving things before I try something out. With Skyrim I tried using something else but for me, NMM is just easy to do and less time consuming than doing it all by hand.

How many Beth games have only had one handed attacks now? Seems they have something against ambidexterity.

Maybe the Todd can't fathom the use of his left hand for anything... I think a lot of those games were produced under his watch....

I on the other hand..... am in the one percentile, but my wife thinks its forced ambidexterity, as I tend towards my left hand, but switch back and forth as it suits me. That usually means I would have probably been left handed but was forced to develop my right by society.... I can draw with both at the same time.... that's my party trick :)

Impressive.

I'm just waiting for the new NMM.

The current version is a pain, but I live with it.
  • It doesn't always remove all files when uninstalling a mod
  • It doesn't always put files where they go.
  • It insists on "updating" every time I launch it with no way to cancel and still play. Any mod with an install menu has to be reinstalled again when it does this.
  • The check boxes next to the installed mod disappear often when I click on them or rearrange the order, requiring me to "update" NMM again in order to get the check boxes back
  • Mods that are uninstalled have to be completely reimported in order to install again.

God, I hope the new version comes soon.

I use NMM, but always download manually, then add the mods with the plus sign button. I don't have many of the problems you're describing.

I do this a lot too. I use my lunch time to download at work cause it's sooooo much faster even it I use my lap top. Also, this way if I want to reinstall for some reason it's there.
