Primary Bug Report Crashing - How to help us solve them

Here's a screenshot clearly showing the cell border where I'm crashing. It's a little confusing, since it's in wireframe, but look at the road and the Cul de Sac at the bottom right for orientation.

The logs end up being minimal use, because they only tell you what the scripting portion of the engine is doing - which is a tiny fraction of the system. The CP Spawn lines can help me identify corrupt model files though, so it's not entirely useless.

@da123rrell Was it crashing as soon as you load that save? After you go to a particular location? After you scrap something? Just need to make sure I can replicate it. Also, what level is your character?

@Drask Do you have a scrap mod like Scrap Everything or Spring Cleaning? If not, check your Fallout4.ini and Fallout4Custom.ini in your Documents/My Games/Fallout4 folder for bUseCombinedObjects=0 If your precombine is turned off by one of those things, you can have massive performance drops in various areas. I had to quit using Scrap Everything because of all the issues it causes my PC.

@ralfetas Your log looks pretty normal, a lot of those warnings are just the game engine loading things in the wrong order - nothing that would cause crashes though. I would guess this is either related to the precombine setting, or could just be your game is overwhelmed. If it's the latter, walking (and this is going to sound silly) backwards or with your camera pointed at the ground from a nearby fast travel point, might allow Red Rocket to load in.

To all of you:
I think I found another potential spot for crashes, which I hope to address in 3.0.3. Since so many plots are being created while you're away, they are probably all updating as soon as you guys enter your settlements, which is probably too much for the game to handle. did all of this, as well as :
disabling SS +addons
let the game run for about 30 min
slept 24h
saved and restartet the game

no problems until i get near sanctuary, instant CTD.
according to the log, quiet a lot of things seem to be disrupted, some even point to drive letters i dont have on this machine ?!

i'm confused. do i have an entirely different problem which happened to occur at the same time i updated SS to 3.0.1?

More likely you had a problem brewing that updating Sim Settlements just exposed.

Did you happen to uninstall the unofficial patch at some point during your playthrough? The logs would suggest that might be the case. If so, re-installing it might fix your save.

Otherwise, Fallrim Tools might be able to rescue your save by running the various options on the Clean menu.
 
Fallrim tools has helped me with my crashes. I don't really know what's causing the problem but when I choose "Remove Undefined Elements", and overwrite the save. My game works without crashing on the cell borders. This was temporary however, and the game crashed shortly after upgrading Sanctuary to level 2. But, I ran the fix again, and was able to move around again, no problem. I tried to view the "Undefined Elements" with Fallrim tools, but only a folder came up with no contents visible. This is my first time trying this though. Maybe someone else has some insight.

It's not 100% fixing my problems, they must be happening in the live game to some extent at least. Not just to the saves.

So I am hitting the same issue getting near sanctuary, except I have a save loading me into the red rocket garage and now that wont even load. I can backtrack to a save about 20 minutes earlier and get as close as the Red Rocket but regardless it crashed there.

I removed any cell altering mods before adding in RotC and used fallrim to clean the saves but to no avail.
 
I am also getting an immediate CTD whenever I approach Red Rocket or Sanctuary. I can't fast travel or walk in. I have tried like 20 different things to fix this and I have had zero success. I am able to load a save from a couple days ago, I can get into Sanctuary, I try a city refresh but I get a CTD again.
 
Try staring at the ground and walking in. Stop, then slowly pan up. I've gotten past my hitch/cell border crash that way before. Still have no idea what's causing it.
 
Is there a way to reset the Sanctuary Settlement without being at the city planners desk? I continue to crash everytime I hit the boundary or fast travel to Sanctuary.
 
I rolled back to 3.0.2. Before I upgraded to 3.0.3, I had an imminent attack at Starlight in my quest list. No matter if I walk or fast travel, I always get a CTD during the attack.

My crash game is in the castle, with followers running sanctuary, Taffington boathouse (whole other issue I reported with no answer) sunshine co-op, murkwater construction and 1 other that I can't remember.
 
Question about the Papyrus log: is there a way to make this look like less of a confusing mess? Is there some kind of parser out there that can break this up into something readable? Should I just not load it in Note (which is the default text file reader)?
 
I use snaketail to see it in realtime with keyword highlighting. The problem is knowing the keywords to plug in but that's a one-time thing and not an every time thing.

If you've not updated to the latest release (it happened earlier today) I would do so, then follow the instructions from the beta thread from the home page to clean the intransigent scripts out of your saves.

If it doesn't work, let us know, we can help.

A lot of crashes on xbox. Can the xbox handle rotc? I know there was a plot limit with the core mod so I was just wondering. I've actually been so frustrated with it I've taken a 2 week break so far
 
xbox for the most part should be able to handle most of the settlements. It'll be a lot better at it once we get through an optimization pass.

I probably would skip loading Sanctuary on Xbox though, at least until we get it optimized.
 
I get a lot of CTDs on PC as well, both with SS 3.0.0 and 3.0.3, on startup or after a few minutes if I try walking away.

However, the papyrus log doesn't have any "CP Spawn" line. I'm quite certain it's Sim Settlements though since it doesn't crash when I deactivate it.
 
I have a savefile with around 250 settlers and a beefy load order (131 plugins including Horizon.) Star light drive-in has 56 settlers, while sanctuary and red rocket are supporting around 30 each. I've also used each patch since 3.0, including the bugged ones but I successfully cleaned the save file with fallrim Tools. I have some expected performance issues near my busiest cities (20 to 30 fps hit sometime) but the game is still surprisingly stable.
I thought this might be a good case for a stress test of sort, pushing the engine to its limits. Would uploading it be helpful research material?
