New Report Exit to desktop = game freeze

I remember when AAF was crashing to desktop and corrupting save files and the fix was to enable write to external file = TRUE … it is now standard in AAF.

My current save file, that doesn't crash is 36,767 … using 2,083.9mb RAM, 12.6% CPU, 1080TI power usage is 5.7% … if any of this data means anything (I know when mine was crashing, it was more towards 40mb and over 3gb RAM....)

John

I also noticed that my save file that got past 42 mb basically refuse to load Bunker Hills now, 42.993 work fine, anything over 43 mb just CTD on approach.

I tested without Sim Settlement 3 in 1 / Conqueror and that same character save went down to 20 mb, which is a bit insane (but I did tell Conqueror to start max level which might not be a great idea), it also removed the crash to desktop on save.

Looked at my first save, still not in the world just in the Sanctuary underground shelter at 29 mb, that's a bit high for my taste.

I do think you are on something there with external file saving, because for the moment I think the amount of data from Sim Settlement being saved in the save file is probably overwhelming for the underwhelming Creation engine.

Just worked 2 nights on my "Player base", so I guess it went up the small bit to hit the "death cap" during that time, a bit sad though, at least there is always Settlement Blueprint to send it to another game.

Spec :
i7 7700k
EVGA 2070 RTX
16gig of Ram
Samsung Evo 256 & 1TB SSD
Note that last time I played with Sim Settlement and I built a few settlement I was on my old i5 2500k and I got the same issues, thought they were just related to my kinda aging pc at that point, not so sure now.

Load order attached
and
save file when I can send it, sadly can't due to new forum account.

Still love the work Kinggath, you're definitely the king of Fallout 4 modding. :p

All I can say is around 40mb save file and things go quirky... so I am not surprised about the 43mb issue. I have the latest hardware too, 1080Ti 32gb 512SSD, etc... Max level as well on the settlements, so, basically the file shouldn't grow from there much except for the records about your quests done and things you collect...any additional building you might do, etc...

I've encountered this bug as well.

I'm not 100% that Conqueror caused it. but I had only installed a few mods at the same time since this problem started.. Conqueror. And some character creation stuff like CBBE and some texture mods.

For now I've forced task manager to always be on top. and I just quit to menu. and then quit the game,

Running on 16GB Memory, RTX 2070 8GB, AMD 3700x and the game is installed on an SSD.
130 mods, and 70 soft mods whatever that means.

havent been able to find my plugins text file to give the actual plugin list yet, am also posting this from work pc at the moment anyway.

I created a new save game and mod setup for the building contest. This is very light on the mods but has Conq. and a pile of add on packs, but little else.
I can exit to desktop no problem.
The issue, I believe, is with mod conflicts, not with Conq. itself.

I'll have to pull up a mod list when I get home, I dont think Im running anything thats too unstable. afterall.

Started totally fresh save and I have noticed a lot of Freezes and CDT when I'm around some settlements or as I'm rendering some settlements.

1. Freezes and crashes happen sometimes with:

Code:
[ (0008C78A)].ObjectReference.SetPosition() - "<native>" Line ?
    [kgSIM_ScrapCleaner3 (0B0035D7)].simsettlements:scrapcleaner.PrepGarbage()

2. Sometimes my game will freeze / CTD while I'm loading Level 3 settlement.

As I'm doing a lot of saving (manual) and auto saving (every 5min) game play loss is not so huge.
I also found out that sometimes switching cells help too (like going coc qasmoke) and then going to the settlement helps too.

Yesterday night I was playing around Sanctuary and as I approached Red Rocket Truck Stop my game just CTD 5 times. So fixed it with coc qasmoke and then teleported to Red Rocket Truck Stop (ofc that placed me inside the bus, but nothing what tcl could not fix). Reason I crashed was the settlement was under attack and some reason rendering that place buged me out.

Never less mods I'm using right now I have used months now and before Conqueror I never had any crashes.

Now I'm freezing and crashing left and right. I keep testing Conqueror, but if my game gets totally unplayable I shall remove it and just stick with handful of Sim Settlements and that is it.

My specs:
GTX 1070ti
i7-9700K
SSD
16GB Ram

In April/May/June, I tried twice to play Conqueror/BoS Liberator with numerous Quit Freezes/Save CTDs. At that time, MrCjohn and Raybo were very helpful, particularly regarding the problems using scrapping mods. I also suspected that Conqueror was giving me problems. So I started playing again after Kinggath and Takarazuka updated their respective mods.

Last week, I started a completely fresh game three of Conqueror/BoS Liberator with no scrapping mods and several other SS mods plus a few BoS/survival/weapons/etc mods. Early in the game, the Quit Freezes started and at Level 11 after Prydwen/Strong the Quit Freezes/Save CTDs accelerated. I then deleted several mods that could potentially cause a conflict, and the problems still occurred. A Steam user noted that old mods could be the source of the problem. I did a mod hunt and Fallout Loot Overhaul, a very old mod that I have used for several years was clearly causing my problem. I deleted the mod and in game 4, I have had no problems yet, and I am currently working on the Prydwen/Strong level.

It is sad when one realizes that a mod becomes dated. There are several. My rule of thumb is a mod to be in a load order has to be within 1 year... anything in 2018 is becoming dated.

Unless you spend a lot of time in xEdit and understand what the mod actually does... some going way back to 2015 can still be relevant based on what it does.

I've been having this issue a lot recently. And with the Sim settlements 3 in 1, everything work great, but the second I load up Conquer, it happens. I let the wizard do it's thing and then get the pop up saying it's completed, and exit, and still in Saving limbo. and I did go through all the mods I have individually and all together, it's literally just this mod that makes it happen. It's a great mod, a must have, but this just ticks me off a bit.

This is from another thread, but I am repeating it here, so hopefully it may be of some value to you.

Since April, I have tried/played 4 Conqueror/BoS Liberator games. My experience has been:
  • April/May/June - Games 1 and 2: I experienced numerous (at one point almost continuous) Quit freezes, Save freezes, and CTDs after 20 - 30 hrs into each game and eventually stopped playing, see https://simsettlements.com/site/index.php?threads/three-situations-need-assisance.9761/. I also thought that Conqueror was the main cause of my problems.
  • October - Games 3 and 4: Game 3 started Quit freezing early in the game, but this was fixed by eliminating one old mod, Fallout Loot Overhaul. Game 4 is now playing reasonable well.
What I did between Games 1/2/3 and 4 were:
  • Deleted all Nexus and Steam mods, game saves, and Steam FO4 game files including files left after using Steam uninstall
  • Reinstalled Steam FO4, and Kinggath’s and Takarazuka's mods after they updated their respective mods in early October (I prefer playing as BoS Liberator)
  • Did not install any scrap mods
  • Did not install any mods that logically appeared to potentially conflict with SS, RotC, Conqueror and the BoS Faction pack
  • After Game 3 started giving me the Quit freeze, did a mod hunt and deleted the old mod Fallout Loot Overhaul, which stopped the freezing see https://simsettlements.com/site/index.php?threads/exit-to-desktop-game-freeze.8399/page-4#post-79314 .
As a result, Game 4 is now reasonable stable for me, but I am playing with no DLCs and only 38 mods. After more than 160 hours of play, I have had 15 non-recurring CTDs, no Quit freeze and no Save freezes. I am having other relatively minor problems, but they are probably due to the nature of a work-in-progress mod such as the Conqueror, see https://simsettlements.com/site/ind...at-is-better-part-2-and-more-questions.11531/

For what it's worth, I took one of my Conqueror Pre-build saves, loaded up some mods. Was good... got to Red Rocket - no city, but use Elianora's Rocking Red Rocket. Went to search the dumpster in back CTD. Haven't got back to it... might be the Rocking part - rocked my game... and honestly, I still think the freezes are coming from too large of save file with all the Conqueror Pre-builds 30 to 48mb.... even without other mods.

Now, when I have had a "freeze", I went outside to burn one, frustration yes... came back 5 mins later, and it had closed...

So I truly think this issue is file size, the exit mechanism from the game - something I have stated SS/Conqueror needs to establish, somehow, an external data file save from outside the normal game, SS/Conqueror mod would have to pull from it after the game is loaded (delay) and a special exit function to save before you actually quit the game (kind of like, dump the data and purge).

Outside of already purging most everything I would consider "old mods" … I don't know much else.

Just my opinion.
John

i've had the same. one night i saved just before i was going to bed - it locked up - so i left it, went to bed. come down the next morning and at some point the game had finished what it was doing and quit out as i was back to the desktop.
what i do now is before i am going to quit - i make a hard save, which always works quickly, then i simply alt + f4 and get out that way. Not ideal, not recommended, but it works.

Humm, ok now I am watching this thread again. Kind of tucked away. Oddly, I have also done what @1ae0bfb8 mentioned and just let it sit, a "long" while later it did kick-out on its own. I don't know how long, I did not sit around to watch.

I do have an old suggestion, "make sure that fo4 is running on top in task manager". At least for me, this helps with shutting down without restarting or doing one of the other alt-shut down methods. Still, I see this does not work for everyone.

I hypothesize as @MrCJohn has said that some type of limit has been exceeded. That is what I tell myself but IDK.

I end up redoing the pre-build sequence without all the possible selections until I can start without the issue being symptomatic. I have tried all the starting levels. Foundation seems to be the luckiest for me while level 3 isn't.

What's interesting is that most people want level 3 pre-builds - reason is the less in-game processing... do you agree with this assessment? Perhaps I need to re-do my pre-builds at the foundation?

Thanks and Merry Christmas brother!

Oh. Humm. That is also what I was thinking. Go to level three and get it over with.
Honestly, I don't want to say.....anything other than.

If the exit to desktop freeze at a specific point & is repeatable "consistently."
  • Then what has worked for me is reducing the number of prebuilds "Incrementally"
  • Reducing the building level down to Foundation.
    • All I am saying here is in "my" game I have better luck avoiding the glitch if I run them at "foundation" level vs. 1 or 3.
***I haven't tested at level 2 and It takes a very long time to remove one settlement at a time from the prebuild list, let things prebuild and then run off and test it. So, my solution has not narrowed it down any further. Than -
1. reduce # of prebuilts and
2. I seem to get better results at a lower building level "being I can have more settlements in the list"

Go figure it would work that way.

Video ramble, but below is what I did/do if I encounter this. It has become a thing I routinely test for at the start.

The video is unlisted it isn't very good, neither is my solution one that I think is feasible for most users or duplicatable for others. It takes me a lot of time to get the balance at the start of every game. Partly, because I am really odd in pushing the limits of how many mods I have running in my game, so for me the amount of time I spend testing and getting it to work is just part of it all.
So for what it is worth--

My hangs are if I exit directly to desktop, not to main menu. Might be something to check?

Also, maybe you can post that city photo and maybe the plans for each you use - since you have tested so much - for pre-builds that are even more trouble-free - if you wouldn't mind?

The CP I used are just the ROTC ones except for the Uituit Coastal Cottage fungus farm and the Franktown Versus Rontown that come with that add-on..

Franktown Versus Rontown - A Sim Settlements Story

Most importantly. I don't think / know that it is a particular location or CP, I am leaning toward just a total number and or level of pre-built set at start-up. Also, note I have around 450 other mods installed that likely affect my limits, settings or in-game issues.

I was having this problem as well but after some testing i find out it was caused by running "Scrap everything" with SS all in on and Conqueror. So no more scrapping for me.

I even use tmm and fast traveled to all settlements and no problems at all.

So I kinda found a solution:

Immersive scrapping tiddy up: /fallout4/mods/29178
And Load accelerator: /fallout4/mods/10283

With this 2 mods together with conqueror i can scrap some stuff and exit the game without bugs (until now), scrap everything still a no go.

I think the problem is caused by the way the game handles precombs. Conqueror is based on them to prebuild the settlements at the start of the game, and scrap everything breaks all precombs..

I found a solution to this. It's idling.
The engine is so busy especially early on that scripts won't allow it to shut down.
2 key things I do:

1.Never pause the game, or allow it to pause when AltTabed by adding this to your Fallout4Custom.ini bAlwaysActive=1

2.Leave my character in an internal cell idling overnight once or twice, plus use internal cells when I go around the map to idle if I'm stepping away from my PC. If I can't use an internal cell I toggle of AI detection with tdetect and just idle anywhere.

Once you have most of the map discovered and maybe 20 hours of idling done the game will start to close normally.
