New Report Exit to desktop = game freeze

    Just started a new game (#6 Minutemen Liberators) and the Quit Freeze is occurring. If I understand correctly, I can "idle" in the underground bunker (where COOTS halo tapes are located) in Sanctuary and that should help correct the problem?

    Hello. I recently came across this forum searching for the answer myself online. I downloaded Sim Settlements - Conqueror v4.2.4 on 3/28/20 and ever since then I've had my game freezing when attempting to exit to desktop via the menu in Fallout 4. It goes to "Saving..." and it never finishes. I'm forced to sign out of my user to get it to close.

    After reading through the forums thoroughly, I did download Quieter Settlements mod and left it on its default settings. I uninstalled the mod and to no avail the freezing continued. I recently uninstalled Sim Settlements - Conqueror, played for a bit on a new save, and attempted to exit to desktop and it worked perfectly. No hitches, slow downs, didn't load, nothing. Immediate exit. My saves are not bloated as my file size for my save is only 24,135 KB and I have 131 plugins, six being light.

    After uninstalling Sim Settlements - Conqueror and the game ran perfectly fine when attempting to exit, I can only conclude that the reason for the freezing during exiting was because of this mod. I also did what was mentioned before. Going in an interior location and waiting to let the scripts catch up and then attempting to save and I had the same result of freezing when attempting to exit.

    One notable thing to mention is I used the randomize settlement building when I started a new game. I removed Bunker Hill and Abernathy Farm to avoid the triangle of death and to avoid unwanted frame drops when going near Bunker Hill. I randomized settlement population with the minimum being 30% and maximum being 100%, I randomized settlement building levels with the minimum being level one and the maximum being level three, and finally I also activated the, I believe it was called, "war" option where the settlements were taken over, also randomized.

    Thank you for your hard work you guys put into making this mod and keeping it updated. I hope this somehow helps because I really loved the Conqueror mod and would enjoy using it again. :)

    if you have uninstalled mods without rolling back to a save you made before you installed them, then sad to say, you've wrecked that play through.
    if you can, roll back to a save before you installed the mods and your game was stable.

    I started a new game with Conqueror being installed and that's the only character save that's ever had that issue with no other new mods being installed besides Conqueror. I made a different new character and tested it without Conqueror being installed and exiting worked perfectly. On that existing save with Conqueror being installed on every exit to desktop attempt, even using "qqq" in console, gave me an infinite "Saving..." screen, like others here have reported.

    I thought it was like he said, too many scripts trying to run at once and the game just couldn't handle it. Since Fallout 4's engine isn't the best I figured it was just that, which is may as well might be, I have no idea. I don't want to point the finger in a negative way, especially since I love this mod, but uninstalling working perfectly fine on a new save I can't help but do so. :(

    i've had the same issue as you are reporting.

    once i simply left my computer and went to bed and at some point overnight the save "ended" and i had my desktop when i came down the next morning.

    its basically related to scripts that are running and running. the reason for that varies from game to game, system to system. it really is a pita to resolve. what i have learned from it though is that sooner or later, the game that is unable to end in a reasonable time is on the road to ruin.

    flaky engine is a great description. it is exactly that.

    Hi, having the same issue, a few people reported loot overhaul as the conflict but I still had exit freezes without that. Even trying less settlements and less population legend still have me exit freezes. However no issues in game play.


    I'd still like to use Conquerer, and I have a second screen so killing the game is no issue.

    What I'd like to know is will continuing to do that ruin my save several hours down the line? Or will it just be a slight annoyance?

    Also is this fully compatible with Depravity?

    mod works with depravity.
    no-one can tell you with absolute certainty that your game won't be ruined. it's safe to assume that at some point, the game will die on you. that's just the way it is.
    when the game is functioning normally - this doesn't happen. i've come to regard it as a sure sign that the game is somehow broken, and once a game is broken, it ain't going to get any better, so i wave it good bye and start over.

    Alrighty, it's a shame then that I won't be able to play conqueror. I've tried to find the cause of the exit freeze over the last two days and have run through the intro to the game way too many times :P
    Hopefully late down the road this issue won't be a thing, thanks for the help!

    For those getting the Freeze on 'Quit to Deskop' when running 'Conquerer' and 'Scrap Everything' here is a possible workaround:

    1- Reinstall Scrap Everythingand when prompted for install of 'Core' or 'Ultimate' select 'CORE' and check all the boxes for the seperate DLC packages.

    2- Enable only the CORE package and test to see if the freeze still exists. In my testing the Quit to Desktop worked correctly

    3- Now enable the 4 DLCs and test. You should once again be getting hanging on Quit to Desktop

    4- Disable the 'Far Harbor' DLC package and keep the other 3 active now test again

    So everytime I enable the 'Far Harbor' DLC package, I get the freeze. I even get the freeze if only 'Far Harbor' is active. I still want to do some addtional testing to hopfully find a fix

    Basically can still use 'Conquerer' along with 'Scrap Everything', just need to leave Far Harbor inactive. If you get to a point you need to scap things in Far Harbor, just enable the package and understand you will freeze when you Quit to Desktop.

    Let me know if you are seeing the same results or different. It will help that I'm looking in the right location.

    Still an issue. I've spent the past several days trying to figure it out to no avail. Not using scrap everything or other mods mentioned that might cause direct conflicts (though, I am using AWKCR, AE, True Storms and an EnB which were mentioned in another post that could possibly cause crashes with Conqueror). My games tend to be heavily modded (200+), but never experienced this problem in 2019, only now when I decided to come back in mid 2020. I use Loot, edits (FO4E in this case), bash and try and pay attention to what the mod author/s says about incompatibilities/load orders.

    My saves are ~20-30MB on a gtx 970 4GB vram, 16GB ram, i7-4790 ~4GHz 8 core, w10 OS, everything SSD. Certainly not the best, but never had issues with games before. I've played around with the load/install order (MO2), reinstalled the game, changed mods around, went through the intro so many times now that I have to give up and move on.

    I feel like it's some mod causing some conflict on/during the exit save as not everyone is having this problem. I just can't figure out which mod that is/may be. I think what others have posted about script bloat during exit save is probably the issue. I haven't tried the idling trick, nor letting my computer fix itself while I sleep (finish the save). Maybe if I had ran into those ideas sooner, I would have tried them, but now I just want to play without having to worry about accidentally not quicksaving and altF4, nor running into possible issues later in a game I'd rather not lose "yet."

    Please don't take this the wrong way, in no way am I saying this is the fault of Conqueror, Sim Settlements and the devs are amazing and awesome people. It's probably my fault with a mod somewhere. In case anyone's interested, I will include my load order at last attempt (last time I tried moving things around to try and fix the issue).

    I've ran with these mods/similar mods in 2019 with little to no issue, today for some reason I can't save exit the game without my entire system freezing (can't altF4, can't alt-tab, can't access task manager, only way to regain control is soft restart). And yes I've tried windowed, borderless, all of that.

    TL;DR: Issue still exists. Can't figure out why. Probably mod conflict. Giving up, but dev/s of SimSettlements ARE amazing, thank you for awesome/fun content.

    I this a list of mods you are using or your actual load order?

    If it is an actual LO? IF it is - it has problems. Lots.

    Both Gambit77 and Thuggy have published load orders you should review.

    It would seem to be outdated but the structure is excellent. He has it "stickied" in the post section of all his mods.

    Why are you not using the 3in1 for SS + that is not where it goes?

    AmazingFollowerTweaks.esp needs to be near the bottom.

    Your Better Settlers aren't following the author's instructions.

    Seeing all this and knowing it adds up you need to go back and re-read the instructions for all mods installed.

    With this many mods you may want to google Fo4edit and look up how to run it to check for conflicts.

    I am not a fan of start-me up. If someone knows how to use it it is fine I just see too many problems with folks who have a ways to go using it.

    If using pre-built city plans limit the complex ones with LO this complex. Try something like:

    Thanks for the response, I'll look into it for sure.

    I use Loot, then if I notice the mod author says it needs to be someplace other than where Loot puts it, I do that. Sometimes I miss that.

    This particular load order was mostly me being frustrated putting things around trying to get the game to exit save. Bear in mind, I spent days on this. This is not a precise picture of how my load order would usually look. In 2019 when I last played FO4, I didn't have any major recurring issues.

    With Conqueror uninstalled the game exits fine with save exit. I'm sure there would be problems down the road with this current load order, but with it (similar to what my picture represents as I did move things around for about 3-4 days) no CTD up to and around Diamond City. Some minor issues, sure, but nothing major aside the exit freeze.

    Ugh wow, I was unaware of 3in1 SS and downloaded all of them. Thank you for pointing that out. Last I played there was no 3in1 and I didn't check the details as they all worked like a charm before. Regardless, with Conqueror gone, game exits to desktop without issue.

    I've never had a problem with start me up, I mainly just use it to skip the beginning scene.

    Thanks again for the insight. I will fix these issues, maybe even try conqueror again -I would love to have it-, but I don't know how many times I waited ~2 hours to check if the save exit worked and not sure I want to do it again; least not anytime soon. Especially now that I can exit the game without issue.

    @ ksalol, welcome to the forums. FYI, I don't use the Conq add on. About the only way I have been able to get out of the game without having time to eat dinner is to...
    1. save the game from escape.
    2. Quit to main menu.
    3. Quit to desktop.

    Thank you! I will keep that in mind going forward. I'm going through RayBo's great suggestions right now. Got the load order manually set, just need to check for conflicts... something I admittedly put off for as long as possible and just crash test it (play until something goes wrong, then figure it out). I know it's not the best method, but I can usually fix my issues. This is the first time I honestly couldn't do it.

    I'm tempted to try out Conqueror again as it's such a great mod and adds so much extra playability. Before I knew of my issue I decided for the raider play through. Went to Concord, talked to the guy, ran to the settlers
    killed everyone and felt great. No more settlements that need help, eh Preston?

    To be fair, I think Valkyrie allows for that. Regardless, it was awesome and plays nice with the rpg side of things. And Conqueror could add megatons of extra gametime, especially with other faction mods.

    Anyway, I think I will give Conqueror one more go. If nothing else, to at least report back here with what happens. It's going to be a while, though. Going to try and get everything right. But ultimately, I think I just have too many mods. Maybe I'll go with medium next time instead of high when SS asks even though the FO launcher wants to set everything to ultra with my pc (I actually set it down to high, and ofc turn shadows as low as possible).

    Alright, I believe I've tested/played enough (30+ hours gameplay) to say that with the help I've received here the game exits on save just fine. 99% of the time the game exits within a few seconds, once in a great while there will be a slight delay (5-7 seconds).

    I followed RayBo's recommendation with the load order and will post my LO if anyone wants to see it. I also cut away some of the mods I felt I could do away with. If I get involved with a game, I will be sure to use parrotheada1a's technique if save exit becomes an issue again. That or quicksave and alt-F4.

    This definitely derailed an earlier playthrough - I kept having the game just exit without any warning and finally gave up and unloaded a bunch of mods on a new playthrough when it would freeze. Didn't think it was actually the mole rats that did it though. good to know,

    was this about the mole rats or about the freezing on exit? cause it doesn't help with the mole rats
