Minor Spoilers Ahead!

Okay...I know that to many of you this will sound like a bad player blaming the mod, but here goes.

I'm finding the gunner ambush when you meet Aiden to be frustratingly difficult. The number of gunners seems to be endless (I never seem to get their numbers down), I have very little room to maneuver, and several enemies spawn beyond of the edge of the map, so I can't get to them. That last bit would be serious problem if I was a melee character, but as a person who uses shotguns it's frustrating that I can't engage them as closely as I want.

I'm playing in Survival difficulty, and my build is a stealth sniper primarily, with a bit of shotgunning when I'm forced into close combat. That makes this core encounter just brutal. I know there will be times I can't be sneaky, but since I'm forced into a cut scene conversation there is no way to prepare for it in any way. I just go from cut scene into a laser meat grinder. There is no meaningful cover- the only structure is beyond the edge of the map, so I can't go there.

That aspect alone is really frustrating because when I'm being slaughtered, from high ground all sides it's hard to figure out why I can't go into this shack in the direction that the gunners came from. The screen prompts are easy to miss. In part this is due to the fact that I wore Power Armor, so the HUD and FOV make seeing the fence tough. I also went on this quest at night, so all I see are lasers coming in from all directions in the darkness made worse by the light glare. Aiming is impossible, and AP runs out fast. Now, I understand that doing it at night was a choice I made, but to be fair I was doing what any player would do- play to my strengths. That works normally, but when you have them all neutralized by enemies that instantly spawned all around you there is just no chance.

Aiden yells something about tactical high ground, so after a dozen or so attempts at winning the fight I tried just running away, but there seemed to be gunners pretty far down the tracks, so it was just more punishment. I also came into the encounter with a companion who gets wrecked and can't/won't follow unless i heal them, and there is no way to do that without dieing. If I leave them behind in Survival it's a lot more of a problem.

Besides, even if fleeing is supposed to be the solution here (and I don't know that it is), Aiden's prompt is very vague and the quest marker doesn't move. I'm rarely one who wants to have to follow quest markers, but when you're being slaughtered it's hard to have the where with all to know where to go.

This could be a level issue, true. I'm level 21, and one of the charms of FO4 is there are areas so the map that don't fairly scale to lower levels. You are just expected to avoid combat or come back after you level up. I like that approach quite a bit. That falls apart, however, when there is no real indication that it's going to be a tough area (it's close to a starting settlemt after all), and there is no way to avoid the combat. It hurts even more when you're playing in Survival.

I can already hear the replies of "get gud", or "it was easy for me" now. I'm no elite fps player, but in FO4 I'm no slouch either. I expected combat in SS2 to be more difficult than vanilla. It certainly was in Comqueror, but most of those situations you could plan for, and bring an army with you. This ambush seems over the top, imo.

The next few days are writing days, so I won't be playing for a bit. Maybe when I get back in game it will be better for me, but I'm not optimistic.

i move down to the ruined settlement and hide in the house right next to the game boundary and snipe from there. takes a while, but i can get them down that way.
i was also lucky as i got a two shot pipe gun which i've modified to be a great distance sniping weapon as it does double damage with each shot.

I've gotten wrecked on that quest a few times my gunners have a weapon and armor overhaul making them even harder then normal.

I have my survival set to 2x Player and NPC damage, which is a style of difficulty I've had for a couple of runs, so Im used to playing as if the next shot might kill me. I think it's the sheer numbers of this encounter seems unbalanced to me.

The gunners in the vanilla game I've only started to encounter, and then I play as if they are better avoided rather than attacked.

I have played through five times with various fights. I always tanke an endurance 1 in survival, so death is easy.

To me the ONLY thing that made that fight easy was Grim Reaper's Sprint. This is even with having the overpower CC Manwell rifle.

But to be fair I am also ignoring a lot of resources the game has to offer. Which I am pretty sure everyone else is ignoring them as well because "it dont fit the playstyle."
1. Equipping my companion with better gear.
2. Power armor.
3. Chems, foods, drinks, etc.
4. Preston's stupid flare gun.
5. Artillery (if you waited that long)
6. Throw grenades and moltovs back.

So definitely not a "git gud" response but a friendly reminder to use the resources in the game.

Are you able to litter the area with mines before the encounter and then move toward the shack and outpost zimonjia for cover? It might play to your characters strengths more

there are a lot of gunners however, I won't deny that, it took me a long time to find and kill them all

I wasn't. I was pulled into a cut scene dialog as soon as Aiden came in visual range.

I will try again when I have my projects done. If I run I fear I may loose my companion (early curi, so no equipping her with better weapons) for good, and I just hate leaving them behind. Grenades and Moli's work fine, but I'm stuck doing this at night, in the glare of constant lasers, without the grenade arc. There is a lot of cover for my throwables to bounce off of, or prematurely break on.

I'm in PA (only t45a, but still not terrible), and hit myself up with drugs. In Survival none of that is really all that safe.

I'm not claiming I can't do it, but I think there are some things that could be done to make it a little less asymmetrical.

Had a similar experience with the quest. Was playing on survival, around level 23, with two companions (Darlene and Dogmeat). I also turn up the player/NPC damage a bit to compensate for having multiple companions. It took 4 tries, but I finally beat them - but something was definitely “off” and I rolled back the save. I assumed I missed a quest step or it was intended for a much higher level. Jake was also completely missing after the fire fight and quest progression seemed stuck. Here’s a summary of what happened for me: After the dialog with Aiden completes, 5-7 legendary gunners and about 18 gunners spawned on top of me. It was really insane. I’m surprised my rig handled all the laser fire and weapon debris. My companions dropped within about 30 sec. Dogmeat is weak, but I had Darlene setup with fairly tanky armor & combat shotty. Went through all my stimpaks and all my 45 ammo on my Overseers Guardian. Lol. I’m level 30 now. Maybe I should give it another try.

if Jake was missing and the quest didn't proceed you might have still had gunner's out in the wilds somewhere to kill. That happened to me the first time around, I had to search quite a ways down the tracks and then over above outpost zimonja to find all of the gunners and kill them.

I had the same issue with Jake MIA, because he had ran off after the enemy then got too far away and his AI shut down until I got close enough again to resume the fight :P

yeah i was finding them at outpost zimonja fighting the raiders as well a few got killed by nuke launcher but then since mine are buffed they proceeded to take out the raiders and hang around doing nothing till i got there. only real fix i can think of is spawning less or spawning them but not from the direction that the outpost is in so maybe front and to the right cause left on the hill and they invade the outpost. either way i made some armor and weapon upgrades as well as came packing some grenades and got through it with lots of stim packs.

You're right, it is difficult. Might consider dropping the difficulty for this mission and maybe even using TGM.

I'm playing on survival. Once you leave survival you can't go back on it. I suspect there are mods that change it, but it sort of spoils it if I can turn it off and on at will.

Console command can change it back.
cgf "Game.IncrementStat" "Survival Denied" -1
Much easier to just get the mod to enable console in survival.

I tried again today and took out Zimonja first this time. That helped a lot. Only took two tries and a lot less stimpaks. Lol. I also used Boomers fatman to lob a mini nuke into them. Fairly effective. Anyhoo- the quest still won’t finish. Aiden and Jake just stand there looking at me. I’ve looked everywhere for remaining gunners but can’t find any. But I do see a map marker off the top edge of the map. I’m guessing there is one up there I just can‘t get to. I’ll probably need to leave this quest until maybe a patch comes out. The quest New Moon/Old Serenade was also stuck for me, but the last patch fixed it.

Yea , one of my other frustrations with the encounter are the gunners camping off the edge of the map. In the future it might be best to not make encounters close to the edge of the map.
