RotCW: Donations

Wondering if I can get some clarifications about the donations system, particularly in regard to upgrades.

Okay Donating Weapons/Armor increases defense. Does donating better weapons actually help or is this basically a way to get rid of all those pipe guns and raider armor?? I presume I want to give miniguns and combat armor to my guards not donate, but I actually don't know.

Donating food/Water/Caps gives you a buffer on them. Clear enough.

Donating Supplies aka junk: Okay, here I'm confused - if the settlers have access to the workshop (and with supply routes, all workshops) what precisely is the advantage of donating supplies? Is it more efficient? Faster? Keeps them out of the Fiberoptics and nuclear material? What's the actual advantage here?

Weapons and armor are not given to settlers if you donate them. They are converted into a temporary defense rating bonus and the item itself vanishes forever, so be careful that you don't accidentally donate your own stuff. Giving your settlers stuff through the trade menu + 1 ammo will ensure your individual settlers are well armed!

Donating junk prevents you from accidentally using it when building things yourself. It ensures there's enough junk for city upgrades. If there's nothing donated, they will use what's in the workbench, but if it's shy of something they need for the upgrade, it won't upgrade. Each level of city may want more of a thing, and if they just don't want it, they will give it back to you. At the moment, it is best to just donate a few things at a go as too much donated at once may cause crashes. Donate some things, wait, donate some more things, etc etc. They definitely want steel and wood at the beginning, but once it gives it back to you, you can stop.

Donating chems and alchohol too = happiness. You can also donate raw food.

You can find the answers straight 'from the horse's mouth' in the in-depth videos here:

Said that do not expect specific numbers; some things are meant to be found out by the players themselves.

I have to often bite my tongue because spoilers... well, spoil the fun.

Yeah, I watched the videos. I was just mulling it over and went "Y'know, I still don't get the donation system for junk?"

Is the armory rating a temporary boost that goes down later then? Did not catch that from the video; I assumed it was a permanent boost to defense.

As a side note, everything I'm seeing on settlement Defenses says theres a defense cap of 100 but stored food/Water can motivate raids that overcome that cap; part of the reason the default system puts limits on storage. I noticed at some point Sim Settlements doesn't stop stockpiling food and water so much; is there any plan to remove the defense cap to counteract that?
