Pip-Boy radio bug (SS2 Chapter 2 spoilers)

(SPOILERS ABOUT SS2 CHAPTER 2, DON'T READ IF YOU DON'T WANNA KNOW YET.)

Howdee, I just came back to playing with SS2 and I just went to HQ during Moving Day and got told to recruit Mansfield in Vault 81. So I did, but I'm stuck after that! When I exit Vault 81, Jake calls me through my Pip-Boy's radio, and I cannot answer, nothing happens after that, I cannot move, look around, leave, postpone this, I cannot do anything. Now I've been guessing if this is related to XDI (and I asked @msalaba who made a fix for XDI and SS2 already) but maybe I'm wrong. Has anyone else seen that bug? Thx

Sadly, I have still not played through CH2... :(

A wild stab in the dark would be to make sure the dialog camera is turned on in the vanilla settings.
You can test the XDI theory by disabling it and see if that fixes the issue.

Damn haha, ok no problem. Disabling XDI mid-playthough won't cause any issue?

Update: I just tested anyway.
Aaaaaand yep it definitely looks like the culprit unfortunately. Disabling XDI fixed the bug. I turned it back on after that because I cannot play without XDI lol, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea considering I may get stuck again.

The pipboy radio to HQ thing is a bit wonky for me too. I have to start in first person, open the pipboy, use the HQ radio item, then switch to Third person as soon as possible after closing the pipboy. Otherwise I can't respond and/or it cuts off the dialog partway through the conversation (something about the "looking down at the arm in first person" animation).

currently having the same issue, immediately after leaving V81 to recruit mansfield, I get to respond with one line of dialogue (tested all four options after reloading between, to see if it would progress) before just staring at my pipboy indefinitely waiting for a response. Can't walk away, access pipboy, anything. tried first and third person, weapon/no weapon, etc. I don't have XDI or FDI either, so I'm not quite sure where to go from here. I'm just going to reload a save before talking to mansfield and avoid the quest until I can find something that works.

That's a pity since you cannot go further in the HQ introduction quest / tutorial if you cannot go past that point. I hope someone can help.

For some people, myself included, simply restarting game (not just reloading a save) fixed the issue. If that does not work, look at anything that affects dialogue, not just XDI. For instance, Family Planning Enhanced interrupts normal dialogue with its own. There are others that do the same. If you can, try disabling those to see if it gets you past that point.

hi i don't know how but after disabling damage numbers and a few fast travels idk how but i got the two way pipboy radio working, try to fast travel in first person maybe that was it. may attempt to get it working i gess. i did manage to use XDI with it as well and think that may also have fixed it, but then i may also have been dumb luck. but if you are stuck in the same place i was trying to fast travel a couple times in first person maybe that might help. playing this god tier mod is worth the effort!
i hope this helps good luck

I had this bug, too. I can confirm that restarting the game and then fast-traveling in first person solved it for me. After arriving at the new location, the game forced me into third person once Jake contacted me but it still worked.

edit: no XDI in use

This is still broken. Jake says his initial line, stuck completely. Exited the vault in 1st person. Exited the vault in 3rd person. Fast traveled. Closed game, restarted game. Etc etc, broken.

What is the console command to move past this broken part of the quest?

I gotta say, it broke for me too the last time (on 2.3.1). Was in first person, rolled back, third person worked fine. Maybe it was dogmeat getting in the way, idk. Worked just fine before. Anyway.

Looks like these are the quest stages. Didn't know the wiki went in such detail, and of course hoping the quest stages haven't changed. Well, sqs will help for sure.

Update: wasn't getting the results I wanted from queststages, which might be me misunderstanding the next quest How To HQ, which the wiki suggests (without saying as much) should start immediately after returning to the HQ. It didn't. Jake was near the Hub, and Mansfield wasn't even in house. Should that automatically start or does it take a day or two?

I did a fair bit of testing/retesting in 1st and 3rd person. Nearly always stuck in the dialogue camera without any dialogue, BUT I did notice a weird tendency for my character to pull out her firearm here and there as I loaded and reloaded saves. Still stuck in place either way, but I wondered if that might be telling me something. I switched to a completely vanilla weapon and exited 81 in 3rd person. The dialogue box finally appeared, had the conversation, got unstuck from the camera, said to return to HQ, wiki says to return to HQ, went back to HQ and same thing -- Jake is standing around near the Hub and Mansfield isn't there. Moving Day did complete. Not sure what I'm waiting for, likely the the next quest to just appear in my hud eventually?

At least in my case the mod added 10mm variant might have been the problem. A couple of tests after that showed a consistent problem if I had any mod-added weapons (different mods) active. A vanilla weapon active (not out, just active), however, always permitted the dialogue to continue. It wasn't the case that the mod-added weapons always popped out when the radio started, BUT it was always the case that having a mod-added weapon wouldn't allow the box to display the dialogue. Currently also use a weapon display on body mod and auto lowered weapon mod for extra "fun and prizes", as Deacon might say.

Still, only correlation. Who knows.

At this point, I don't know how How to HQ starts. Does it start eventually or SHOULD have started when I returned to HQ?

It starts immediately after that radio call. That's what it did for me last time at least, and I'm sure it's meant to be that way. If you're impatient, it should start when you're in HQ if it haven't. Jake and Aiden have an argument, you interject, Mansfield shows up through the door, says goodbyes to his vault escorts and joins the talking.
The radio calls do draw your weapon when they're over, I think the radio animation involves you wielding something so that's why.
Just to be sure, you might want to update to the last hotfix (2.3.2a), and rollback to before installing 2.3.2, there was a massive script loop bug that survived all the betas :/

I'm on 2.3.1 Chapter 2 and 2.3.1a base mod. I never update main mods until after a few weeks.

So, I will go looking for How To HQ in other threads and see if someone had similar problems, and keep this thread to just the main problem of dialogue boxes.

Well I finally got to this point, but the instant I exited Vault 81, I was stuck at the Radio Message from Jake myself. I did what Bubbadabutcher suggested, I've gotten out of my Power Armor, and dismissed Hancock & even Dogmeat(have the Everyone's Best Friend Mod installed on that one), but I'm still stuck on Jake's Radio message when I leave Vault 81. Options that I should be seeing I don't see, but at least going into third person gets me out but I can't proceed with the Moving Day Quest. Unless there's a console command that can skip that part however...
Anyway, I was able to proceed using the setstage console command & appropriate questid & stage for the Moving Day Quest, but is this issue hasn't been addressed, it has to be.

I've Run into this problem as well, but have managed to get Jakes dialog to go through by putting the pipboy com (For HQ) on a hotkey, getting the contact list to pop up using the hotkey, then selecting Mansfield, having a quick chat with him. (After finishing dialog with him, my gun pops up also), after doing that, I use the hotkey to open the com contact list again and this time select Jake. 4 out of 5 times this works for me to progress Jakes com-only dialog. Just a personal sidenote: It would be nice if this dialog would also work in person to bypass the com use issues, but I'm guessing it's related to programming/scripting complexities.
