Jake won't return to hardware store after new plots on the block

Jake asked to build the plots for "New Plots on the Block". The quest is stuck on the last stage (all boxes are ticked after building the required plots).

Jake and Old Paul follow me around, but only Paul can be talked to. Jake's dialogue menu does not come up, instead he trades gear with me.

I used the console command "CompleteQuest SS2_Sirick_MQ10" to force-complete the quest, but that doesn't change anything. Jake is still following and cannot be talked to. He won't return to the hardware store to start the next quest, "Where There Is Smoke".

Before anyone asks, I do not have a save file from before the quest. I made a habit of overwriting old save files with new ones, which is coming to bite me in the butt now.

Is there anything I can do except to go back to a way older save file and lose like 25 hours on my playthrough? Thanks in advance!

There is a "cheat" under "Tools" in the "City Manager 2078 Holotape" for forcing current 'main' quest to complete, did you try that?

Did you try using the City Manager Holotape, Tools>Cheats to Skip to the next Main Quest?

Judging from the other forum posts on New Plots On The Block, it seems that this quest in particular can cause issues. I eventually got Jake to return to the shop's roof, pushed him off the roof (like the forum entries suggested), but still couldn't start any dialogue with him. Force-completing or skipping to quests via the holotape, the MCM, and console commands didn't work either.

Ah well, back to a save file before starting the first quest with Jake...

So, with the help of that old save, I found a solution. It is all about patience and knowing that kinggath’s marvelous coding gets everything done behind the scenes if you just follow the instructions one step at a time.

The task is to build a commercial, a recreational, and a municipal plot. Note that the scripted scenes with the RobCo pre-recorded voice and Jake are extremely tender and can easily be disrupted, resulting in a bug that breaks the whole questline (not just the one quest) of SS2.

TLDR: Wait for all the cut scenes to play out.

Do each of the three steps in the following manner:

- Do not build more than one plot at a time.

- Build the plot in question and power it.

- Stand next to it and wait for it to be built.

- Do not talk to Jack, as this will break the SS2 questline completely.

- Wait for the plot to be completed. That means: Do not trust the visual cue (building appears to be complete by its outward appearance), do not trust the message in the top left corner that the building is finished. Both are incorrect in this case, as it may take considerably longer, probably due to background processes.

- Again: Do not talk to Jack.

- If the plot is truly done, the RobCo pre-recorded message about the plot will play from its ASAM sensor.

- Again: Do not talk to Jack.

- After the RobCo message is done, seemingly nothing happens. But keep waiting and (you guessed it!) do not talk to Jack.

- After a while, Jack will initiate a dialogue with you. Note that only Jack’s summary dialogue for each plot truly completes the quest step. If Jack does not initiate this summary dialogue, the mod is already broken and you need to start up an older save game.

Hope this helps players that are stuck in a similar situation!

Amen to that. While the base game was designed for you to be able to interrupt dialogue (that was even a selling point stated by Tod Howards at E3 when presenting Fallout 4) and even wander away from a quest in progress, it does not hold true with most quest mods out there. There was a quest in the Bleachers that I was able to break three times, with a different mistake each time, before I eventually got through.

At any rate, you are right in saying that you have to let the scenes play out and do only one thing at a time.

I had the same problem try the console command “Resurrect” on Jake. It let the main quest continue for me.
