Community Feedback Request: What SS2 content is the most (in-universe) newsworthy?

That's an interesting question - are they a propaganda-driven, "state" controlled media or an independent newspaper?
I was assuming it was "independent" myself, and that they'd only write/publish articles based on what The General Public would have been able to know - thus a lot of the "Unique Settler" quests wouldn't make the news, because "sole survivor finds another person's lost trinket and kills 200 raiders in the process" would just be another day in the life; whereas "they figured out how to make these assum things manufacture ammo for us" definitely would.

Something like "Where There's Smoke", though... I'm picturing that being more written from the perspective of an outside observer who (clearly) doesn't have all the details that The Player would, written about how sad it is that the settlement was razed and mentioning hearing a firefight but not seeing who did it, something like that.

I would think the events related to Mansfeild's third task would be newsworthy.

Thinking about Vault 81 and player antics, reminded me of my initial curiosity after getting the vigor tester and just... Testing everyone... I joked in my head what people must be thinking about how I was just running around with this thing looking at everyone's stats.
I felt like a Frenzied Vault scientist yelling "I'm going to put my quantum harmonizer in your photonic resonation chamber!"

My vote is on a commercial for THE RON.

Thats very much an obvious one though. A fair portion of the other quests (both Jake's and the Unique Settlers) dont really make sense to be in the newspaper though. Maybe for the Unique Settlers, only the ones that unlock new plot subtypes due to the reporter getting excited about the breakthrough in farming or whatever?
Speaking of The Ron, some of the little things in SS2 are the best little notes for me, like that there are ads for The Ron.

I don't like to point but ...
There are people selling drug dens as if they were residences. I think a publication of this is necessary, to warn the victims.
Murphy2.png

Plain Tex (Sorry google translate)
Mama Murphy Falls On Drugs

The Commonwealth is a drug paradise and there are always nasty people out there willing to take advantage of it. What is the problem? They are selling dens to get high as if they were residences. The suspect is Msalaba ...

Maybe a few articles that are triggered as the player's empire grows. Perhaps the first at 3 or 4 settlements, talking about how these new settlements are changing the lives of people looking for safe places to live. Then after 10-12, another talking about how awesome this progress is, and good stuff. Then a third after 20-25 that speculates about the danger of some lone weirdo who seems to be taking control of the entire commonwealth. Perhaps with a few quotes from the mayor of Diamond City talking crap about this so-called vault-dweller.

What about some classified ads?
  • Job Postings
  • Offering services (gun sales and modding, pest control, bodyguard services, plumbing & electricity & building services, whatever else is useful in the commonwealth)
  • the odd dating ads (ghoulish widower searches loving companion for the next 200+ years, super mutant fetishist, regular people searching for companions to face the strains of the commonwealth together)
  • buy & sell section. Everything from guns, food, materials, plots of land in settlements, ...

Is it possible to tie the articles to an event when a plot is actually built?

Having a steel production or glue or advanced power and water plants or agriculture is a huge deal! For the first time in over 2 centuries settlers are actually able to provide a stable and steady stream of electricity, water and food. Industry is coming back for everyone to participate.

That is something only the institute, the brotherhood of steel or other large factions (e.g. in fallout New Vegas) were able to provide. Having built the first advanced water or power plant or industry in the whole area definitely would be in the news.

On the same note: is it possible to tie articles to settlement stats and fill in settlement names dynamically?
E.g. if a settlement reaches 200+ defense. That's a massive fortress providing safety. Similar events for water or food or shelter. Everything making the lives better is a huge improvement over the current state.

In essence: The ss2 settlements are like heaven compared to what is currently around. Look at Diamond city. That's the best everyone was able to come up with in 200 years. But when you look at it it's really a rather unimpressive place. Small and with only about 3 dozen settlers...

Some SS2 settlements easily dwarf the "jewel of the commonwealth". That HAS to be newsworthy and make people be in awe about the new possibilities and the new big faction rising in the commonwealth.

And another crazy idea: this is way too deep into the rabbit hole. But what if articles in the newspaper actually affect the settlements?

I know it's a completely new mechanic. I just like to get the idea off my mind.
Positive news about a settlement might encourage raiders to attack as well as more settlers to show up. Negative news might decrease happyness.
Ok. Thats it for now. :)

Ah there's more:
There's a quest right outside diamond city where a female raider is crying for help luring the player into the tool shop. (The same where you have to get the paint to repaint the stadium wall) When you go in you can overhear a conversation and you're attacked by the raiders. When you advance to the cellar you find tons of corpses in the basement. I can't remember if there are hints towards cannibalism. Either way: There could be an article about missing people in the area that would nicely fit in the whole "the institute is abducting people" theme.

I like the classifieds idea a lot! Maybe there would be a section for roommates. Craigslist roommates would explain some of the weird cohabitation situations I’ve seen.

It's not really SS2 content. But how about an article on how the BOS is able to send a seemingly never ending supply of vertibirds and crew to their unnecessary and entirely avoidable firey deaths?

Seriously?? We've all seen this. Everytime a vertibird shows up they go full on kamikaze just to explode 10 seconds later to rain down firey debris and poor BOS corpses...
Whats up with that? I think this situation would really lend itself to a talented writer who can make fun of that while still not taking it too far. Maybe a reference to BOS elder Hodd Toward deeming this the most effective strategy given the BOSs lack of artillery...
