City plans too simple?

So I started to play mainly SS2 because I really like the idea of auto build settlements which don't look like boxes with turrets on top. But I progresses trough the game and I am little bit disappointed that city plans are to simple. No fencing mainly only basic plots landed down. Only one plan I really like an that is Boston airport, nice walled shanty town. Then there is Taffington boathouse, I really like interiors and placing the wind turbine. Nice work on Covenant to... On other hand I was really disappointed in The Castle... nice use of the internal plots but there should be some rampart fixing and who the fxxx put house plot on artillery position? Others aren't that bad just too simple and don't use a special features of the town like overpass highway...

As I understand it, the City Plans included with the mod are deliberately "bare-bones" so that even XBox players can actually use them without frying their consoles. I'm positive Addon Pack makers will make ones just as over-designed (if not more so) once they're able.

Ok that make sense. The Castle wise, is there an artillery plot in SS2? Is it bond to old guns?

There isn't an "artillery plot", at least not in the "core" of the mod as far as I've seen. I'm sure someone will make one as part of an Addon Pack though. (I'm aware of at least two that existed for SS1 so it'll happen eventually, although I seem to remember someone saying once that they didn't actually work properly when using the Signal Flares)

I had removed the 155mm M1 arty mod I was using since I wanted to be sure this playthrough was as conflict free as possible but will be using it next playthrough. In fact my next playthrough will not use any auto assignment except for housing as it seems to build farms last instead of first, and never leaves my arty gunners as arty.

That is going to continue to happen. For some reason the game keeps pulling people off vanilla items no matter what settings you use.

I've not yet seen a city plan for The Castle as a proper fortress and Minutemen HQ. It is acquired far enough into the game that there should be plenty of resources and caravan support for supplies, so it could have restored walls of concrete and stone, not random junk. With martial stations on the bastions, and everything properly organized, orderly and built with good materials, not just another random shantytown full of flimsy shacks.

tldr; build it yourself, General. Even if you delegate all the others, The Castle should be a showcase, symbolizing that The Minutemen are back to stay, and not look like the queen mirelurk vomited up a scrapyard.

I am on my 6th play through and I am hoping to make it as far as the Castle this time.
Half the reason I had to restart so many time is the amount of script lag from making a bunch of settlements with like 20 population and 50+ plots

So if you are looking for some monstrous city plan for The Castle it just might not be "workable."

I have been trying to get my settlements into a "finished state" to be able to export/import with Workshop Framework before I even think about doing leveled plans.

You also have to consider there is many SS1 mods still not converted and a real small choice for plots.

This is one of the reasons I've restarted so many times since as I learn more about how things in SS2 function I scale back idea's to fit current constraints. Plus the evolving nature of addon releases changes things I thought were set. For instance there's a new leaders release that seems to conflict with one I'm using yet might suit me better. So now I'm conflicted about my choices and may once again restart to test the newer release. For the Castle I don't think I'll use a city plan again.

Not for me. I've done rebuilds of the Castle in my games before, and the more ordered and repaired they are, the more they stand out in a way I just don't like. I prefer to have them fit in with the environment. As absurd as it is that 200 years after the war there are no functioning large scale governments or well policed sprawling cities. it's just the way the lore is written. Heck, Diamond City has been settled for a few generations I think, and it's still a shanty town.

There are modders making city plans however it takes a bit of work to move the collection of city plans from ss1 to ss2 or in my case it is just easier to start fresh and build new city plan. That being said still takes weeks to get a city plan to a place I am happy with and release. It is the little details that chew the most time but it makes the city feel lived in and natural to the setting.

Not to mention some play testing to make sure the plan works.

Personally I am still unsure on whether I want city plans or not because they take away a lot of the discovery and unlocking. You cna turn that off but then you end up with a city plan that wont work because your missing the class/tier upgrades.

I'm not sure I agree. Now, full disclosure, I NEVER use city plans. But I did take a look at every option in the holotape and my understanding on how everything work is as follow:
  • If you follow the questline and don't use the cheats in the holotape to unlock, you don't get city plans until you have every plot type unlocked.
  • There is an option to allow the city plans to use designer choice or not and even after that there is an extra option to allow designer choice to add a plot even if you haven't unlocked it.
  • Having the designer plan on and the other option off and then selecting a city plan should in theory place all the right plot types and use the designer choice for any unlocked plan but use a random plot for those that are not unlocked.

So unless that city plan is intended to be very late game with all the plots unlocked (which I would hope would be indicated in the city plan/mod description) I don't think it would create many huge issues. Once again, this coming from assumptions made by a guy who never use city plans so if I'm wrong in my assumptions please let me know.

One advantage of the simple, 'level 1 and done' city plans is that they get a basic settlement started, leaving plenty of room for my creativity to build on what the plan and manager started. This playthrough I am focusing on SS2, not "Main Quest", it is much more fun to do settlement building as the goal, not as something that gets in the way of other things.

Yes I have noticed my Security people constantly need to be reassigned back to security duties ...

Just tried you red rocket plan the last few days was a nice city plan even downloaded all the new addons so it was correct. Got to level 4 but then had to remove cause I had 20 people at sanctuary 10 at abarnathy and 14 at redrocket was starting to get crashes at sanctuary. Gonna try it again without the other 2 built so I can let it finish. Really liked the car junkyard on the abarnathy side was a nice addition.

Oh thanks, man, I am I think maybe 3-5 days away from having Abernathy farm finished then I am off to Sunshine for the rest of the month. Then I will do Tenpines, Starlight and outpost Zimonja and then go back to sanctuary and repair all the houses and make a beautiful place to call home.

Speaking of City plans, are there going to more of them in the next update?
Maybe. Truth is, the team keeps things pretty secret for as long as they can so we don't officially know what the next update is even gonna be. We all have our guesses and in some of them, they involve elements of conqueror. If that's the case, maybe they will add some new types of city plans based on defending an area.

But they will still be very simple. If you want cool, creative, crazy city plans you need to look at what others will do in addons. Because of how new SS2 is there isn't much yet but they will be coming soon.

I’m really hoping for conquers in the next round of updates with the main story.

As for the simple city plans I really love the simple plans, I mean there’s no way that settlers that can’t build their own defenses housing or other stuff could build crazy gated turreted little towns. The no fence is way more realistic in my eyes. Plus settlers are to dumb to build stuff without asam so anything overly complicated seems unrealistic to me.
