Vassals Broken After Nuka World Open Season and Before

I am wondering if anyone has found a work around for how to get your vassals back after siding against the raiders in Nuka World and completing Open Season. This is on the wiki as a known issue to be fixed in a future update but I want to wrap up this playthrough soon.

What Happened

When I finished Open Season I got notices in the top left hand corner of my screen for each settlement/outpost I had saying they were no longer loyal to me. This was immediately followed by another set of notices that they were once again loyal to me. This was followed by a notice that city plans are now available for Covenant. I found this odd since I had previously taken Covenant as a vassal via an assault.

Then I noticed that the vassals seemed to have stopped sending me caps. This was followed by them appearing as regular settlements on the map using the farm icon instead of the vassal icon. I tried to see if I could retake them as vassals but the assault menu does not list them as options when selecting make vassal. When I go to the settlements my flag is still raised on the pole, some of my guards are sometimes there, and I have the ability to use the workbench.

Convert to Vassal Also Suspect

I saw one person recommend simply using the work benches to create war planners desks and selecting the vassal option. Unfortunately, I am hesitant to try because it seems the vassal conversion feature is also bugged. I tried converting Abernathy Farm to a vassal, received a notice that doing so would result in me no longer being able to use the workbench, continued, and when I was done I could still access the workshop and the settlement still looks like a normal settlement on the map. It also shows up under workshops like a normal settlement.

In addition, Oberland Station is bugged out. I originally acquired it as a settlement but abstained from developing it because I knew the Gunners would take it in Chapter 3. When the Gunners took it I decided to select the "make vassal" options instead of "liberate settlement" simply because I didn't feel like managing the place. This didn't work but unlike the other error I could still select make vassal as an option for Oberland Station after retaking it. When I did, I found myself fighting my own troop who were reinforced by my own outposts. Then I converted it to an outpost which didn't solve the problem. Now it is still listed as an option to attack but is running smoothly with one major flaw. That flaw is that when trying to start an assault from Oberland you can't and are instead given an error message that something is wrong with the outpost.

My Plan

Since I don't feel like waiting for a patch I think I will simply abandon the vassal system altogether. My main reason for using it was to get small prepopulated settlements under my control without having to do much else. I think if I were to convert them to regular settlement and assign basic city plans they would probably contribute better than they did as vassals anyway.
