I have successfully imported a settlement. I assume I have to call a town meeting and assign the settlers to jobs, food, beds, defence? any advice welcome.

Put in a CityPlanners Desk if its not there already and just assign a City Leader. City Leader from your companions and they will sort it all for you. No, you dont have to select a cityplan to build for the leader to give effect.

crikey! is it really that simple? I am much relieved. the thought of sorting out 20 settlers was daunting. mostly because it's friday night and alcoholic beverages have been partaken of. three cheers for SimSettlements!

To start a new plan with fresh plots in a full settlement may give you a shortage of food, as I think most plans are based on lvl 3 plots for the full settlement. Good thing if you already have a supplyline or something to that effect.
Cheers.

They will auto assign without a desk too. Just leave and you'll start getting notices of things being built.
IF you imported upgrades plots, leave & when you return they will start auto assigning.

last night I learned that importing a blueprint into a area, that hasn't been scrapped completely, leads to all sorts of strange sights. I was hoping I could find all the things that shouldn't be there and delete them manually. but I had to give up and use the nuke option. now I have everything as it should be. phew

I use the Town Gavel to prep a settlement. Then I can quickly clean up any custom scrapping.
Also, I make a save just before the import/export. For the obvious reason, but also because if the game saves when you close the Pip-Boy, after launching the import/export, that save is borked. As it will be running TS when you try to load it.

i learned my lesson about saves after my last playthrough was fubared. now i save before i change anything. eg installing new mods or uninstalling old ones.
you can always go back in time in game that way. (unlike real life unfortunately)

For serious saves I use the console. That way the game can't delete them. Well.. shouldn't be able to delete them. LOL
