SS2 keeps growing my save size by about 1 MB per minute!

So, this is weird. I noticed that saving and loading was taking a long time... turns out my save file was 400MB! I looked in my saves folder and noticed my save files had quickly ballooned. They had been stable around 23MB for a long time, then suddenly shot up to 100MB and from there to 400MB!

Weird. Extra info: I had not played for a few months. The 23MB saves were all from before my break. The bloated saves were from when I picked up playing again last week. My gut says a an update to SS2 causes this issue.

TESTING TIME!

- I reverted to the last stable 23 MB save I could find. Load game. Stand still. Do nothing. Save every minute or so. Every time I save (main menu save, not quicksave), the file size seems to increase by about 500KB - 1MB. Quickly ballooning from 23 to 45 in a few minutes of standing in Sanctuary doing nothing.

- Went back to an even older stable 23MB savegame. File size starts bloating. This rules out that a certain gameplay trigger (quest complete, plot / city build) causes the issue, because I had played for a few hours after this save before my hiatus and the save files had remained stable at 23MB with an older version SS2. This increases my suspicion that the issue lies with a newer version of SS2.

- Disabled SS2 and all associated plugins (SS extended, a few expansion packs). 400 MB savegame went back to 8mb, and remained stable.

- Enabled SS2. Loaded 8MB savegame. Filesize instantly jumps to 23MB. Not surprising, as my savegames were stable at around 23Mb before the bloating started.

- Enabled SS2 but none of the expansion packs, loaded 400MB save. Stand still, do nothing. Save game every minute. Filesize climbs steadily.

- Any save I load with SS2 disabled, no matter its size, drops back down to 8-9MB without SS2, and remains stable.

What the hell is going on??

Do you have stuff built from ss2 on the old save maybe the newest update is trying to force something to run but it’s just backing up the system adding background bloat. May be time for a fresh start after 2 days and about 15 settlements built up my save size is only like 40mb’s

I had a very similar issue. Can you check your log files for anything suspicious. On the save file which bloated I had a faulty plot writing hundreds of lines to the log every second causing the log files to bloat as well to several GB. Maybe there's sth going on.

247 mods, 51 MB save file.
(yes, includes SS2 - Have about 10 settlements, with about 4 on city plans - the rest manually added plots.)

Never do quick saves. I play survival, and make a save via console when ever I am at a bed, or a workshop.
(I do sleep in the bed, so as to lose the adrenalin boost, but I do a full save via console after that).

21 days into the game, working on companion quest lines (I love tales from the commonwealth....but that is another story).

Now, been that way for ...oh ...a while. Need to find time to play. And work on some mods, oh and work on a project in the garage, oh and finish those minis in the craft room, oh and 3d print that new toy for the kids, and....and ... and...

That's an interesting idea. How would I go about checking log files?

Checked the papyrus logs. Found they are endlessly repeating the following:
