Settlers not Working In Plots

Hey guys,

Firstly I am sorry if this is adressed before, I could not find it. I have played over 80 hours atm with SS2 enabled. I have a couple of problems related to same error (I guess) persistent from the start. The error is, settlers do not travel to or work in their plots. They stay put in homes or walk around doing nothing.
  • Main drawback is that my market area is always empty (I do talk about day time when stores are operational). So I can't use stores or have to track vendors up.
  • Other work plots like communication/industrial also tend to be empty a lot. They do supply resources so they work but kinda immersion breaking seeing everyone at their residential plots.
  • Lastly I experience clumping up sometimes. Mainly in my big settlements (Sanctuary 22 settlers, Castle 20 S, Vault 88 20 S). I found a couple of threads on this topic, I've seen someone writing settler sandbox expansion fixed their clump problem so I downloaded it. Nothing much changed. https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/20442?tab=description
  • I also sometimes experience settlers clumping up together in wierd places. Also sometimes they all workout in a recreational plot like 10 man in 1 person plot, I confirmed they are not assigned to that plot.
I can share loadorder if desired, its big. Thanks for help.

Its been doing that for a lot of people, with little rhyme or reason as to when or who (although the Unique Named Settlers seem more prone to it than the Generics).

I'm pretty sure the settlers clumping up is caused by script lag. It seems the ai package is on hold until the VM catches up. After waiting a while, sleeping or waiting for a hour seems to start the ai and they go about their business.

I have tried the mod you posted. I never noticed any changes in settler ai and have removed it from my load order quite a while ago.

I mostly notice clumping after finishing the first recreation plot. Once the relaxation park goes down, all the settlers tend to flock toward it and never leave.

I thought about script lag too, but no matter how much I waited in my settlement It didn't get solved. Let me explain how long I waited as this, I prepared and ate dinner, drank coffee, smoked a couple cigarettes walked my dog then had a shower :grin Probably over 2 hours.

I have a nice pc, built last summer with 5700xt & 3600x so its pretty fast handling scripts but I do have a lot of script heavy mods.

This definetly increased my clumping. Mostly training ones.

Sandbox expansion is honestly only needed for Vault 88. For other settlements the effects are weird. I remember in the settlements close to water settlers were constantly swimming towards unknown destination. And died. So yeah, not safe.

Even then, only if you build out beyond the entrance hall/door and the first big chamber where you first meet Barstow - they seem to sandbox fine that far at least, it's only if you go further out that they get confused.

All that beautiful building area seems useless if they won’t actually go work there. I love walking around my settlements and seeing it alive and bustling. Clumping really messes that all up. I could understand when the do it towards the evening around the bar or restaurant. The rest of the time is a different story though.

So I fixed some settlements by using unassign all from town gravel thingy and assigning manually for every settlement. Also figured out some other things in the process. EDIT: It takes quite a bit for game to process un-assign all. So if you try it don't be surprised when you see everyone still assigned. Give it like 10-15 mins.
  • To increase build area at sanctuary i did use foundations on river and built my stores on there. Like a marina. I don't know why but no settler pathes to that direction nor the shop keepers go there. I assume its to do with ss2 foundations & settler pathing or vanilla programing blocking settlers walking on river by not processing SS2 foundations on the water.
  • Special named settler generally do not work well with plots. I tried a lot of different plot-named settler combos. Powell, Li, Archon etc. They seem to have their own "schedule". Even Li is not in her own petshop but rather wanders aimlessly inside vault 88:grin.
  • At castle any plot I built outside of the "castle" had no one in it, even residential ones. Plots inside castle worked fine.
  • I have so much scripting mods It probably broke some aspects of mod. Like my caravans are not working at all. For anyone starting a new SS2 playthrough my advice is to dedicate that playthrough to ss2 and remove everymod which is not used for settlements. After a point too many scripts brakes the game.
  • Last but not least, multi-man rec. plots generally result in a lot of clumping so try to avoid these in crowded settlements. I am going to avoid all rec plots for the rest of this playthrough since everyone in settlements are hanging in rec plots for me.
