Old Post Marking NPC's

I am looking for ideas or a mod that will allow me to mark an NPC in some way.
I want to be able to mark my Minute Man soldiers, in a lore friendly manner, after I upgrade thier armor.
Colored hat, face tattoo, red scarf,......
Something that will not spawn own its own that I have to give to an NPC.

I personally don't give them a hat until they have everything I want then I put the hat on to mark them as done.

Yup, this is exactly what I do with Raider Recruits. I use a mod called "The Ring of Low Maintenance", which boosts an NPCs stats, makes them nearly invincible. Once I equip a guy with one of those, I also give him a hard hat. I know at a glance, then, who's been boosted.
