It has probably been mentioned before in these seven pages, but Jake might also be carrying a torch for his "ex"-wife, which we don't know much about. Either way, it looks like you'll have to be patient through Chapter 3 for a spark to fly.
And for all the gushing about the plot of SS2, which is pretty good, I see as many forced bunts as in the vanilla game. A big one is why a woman would pack up and leave her husband in a fairly safe community without a word for parts unknown. This isn't like hopping a bus to the next big town. A nice safe bus in a nice safe, civilized nation. I figured Jake came from Kentucky, or at the most Tennessee. If they came from TEXAS, well... that's just insane, and makes no sense at all. Even from Kentucky, what would possess a woman to head off into the wild deadly yonder - past relatively safe spots along the way - to Somewheresville? Who would say, "I know! I'll go to the east coast where... more missiles hit, and there are probably still radiation issues. And Raiders. And Gunners. And Super Mutants. And monsters. Big monsters. And I've heard of things called Synths killing everyone too. But there's rumor of one or two big cities out there, maybe three. That nearly got wiped out, or did. Hm. So......... yeah, let's do this!" Not to mention, how many big, well guarded, remotely safe caravans are there between here and Somewheresville?
With every story, there must be more to it or... well, that's a curious deal, and you take it with everything else that the Fallout world hands you with a shrug and a wink.
