Anyone ever wished that the gunners were a more fleshed out faction? They can destroy whole towns apparently, and seem to intend on "killing absolutely everything that isn't a gunner." So they probably came from somewhere else, and could have had a rich backstory and motivations as such.
They're not a weak faction, just... lacking any kind of complex interaction with the player (and no one can accomplish anything without the player in fallout 4.)
With the player's help, they would have been every bit a "major faction," with a potential for their own story. Maybe some of them are even a little discontent with "destroy civilization." They're raiders in different clothes. But who were they before they came to the commonwealth (which I assume they did come from elsewhere, because otherwise they're mercenaries burning down their own homeland, which is weird.)
With sim settlements and conqueror, it really has me thinking about how minor factions could be turned into something more.
