    So, I installed F4SE.

    Game broke.

Tried multiple things to maybe correct it. Game wouldn't even launch from Steam. So, now, I am watching the 'Allocating disc space' bar. Going to start with a fresh install with no mods active. Hopefully this'll help. Anyone else have problems with it or did it just work off the bat for you?

I have had no issues with installing it. I have heard some peculiar mods will try and overwrite it, which is bad.

Did you try just dragging again the files into the game folder and yes to all overwrites?

Gopher is good. Just do the fresh install and install it first before any mods.

And make sure you run the loader icon, not the game icon. Also, right click on the loader and "run as administrator".

Gopher does it the wat he does for reasons. But I just do the manual install and it works. If it doesnt, it is because some will forget all the files and most likely the scripts folder under data.

It really is simple to install and havent personally had issues with it.

Btw.. if new to modding, welcome to the most rewarding and gut wrench bs you will encounter in your life. You will thrill to what Fallout4 could have been, and the next moment breaking your keyboard.

I install and re-install everything 2 to 4 times a month and keep a back up of the entire game folder on another drive. I have the process down to 2 hrs total from uninstall to exiting the vault once again.

If u could give you one helpful thing, go to BRB and follow his process. It will be a great and reliable playthrough. And when you understand in and outside, you can try other things...

    Wont regret it.

One important detail that you need to remember about F4SE is that it needs to be updated whenever Bethesda updates F04. And as well, any mod that relies on the F4SE master, like Looksmenu, MCM, and Place Anywhere..... Usually the people that made the tool and other mods are pretty fast at releasing updates. About a day or two is normal. I've never used NMM to load F4SE, and a manual update/install is at best a drag & drop affair. Once you do it a couple times, it will become second nature.

f4se is a simple install. just make sure to follow the instructions to the letter, and that's it.
you will then need to take care for any/all mods that get broken any time bethesda release updates to the game, as this breaks f4se, and subsequently any mod that depends on it.

fair warning, some mods authors are quick to update, others less so.

i'm currently working out which mods i can do without in my load order because, quite simply, its a pain in the ass, if a mod author doesn't update their mod if/when f4se is updated.

Turn off your automatic game updates.

When the game updates, do not update. Wait a week or two instead.

Check the updates for F4SE and mods that depend on it. If they have all been updated - do your updates.

    —edit—

Also, check exactly the file versions that you download. I once had a file which had been updated BUT the author accidentally had the wrong version as the main download.

It took nearly a week to figure out what was causing my game to CTD some 30-60 seconds after starting.

Can you still do that? Maybe it's a region thing but steam has stripped my ability to stop automatic updates. Or at least it won't let me play until I update. Terrible design. But once I update I can drop the old exe in.

I lost my shit the last time it updated and almost caved to the temptation of a backalley exe. However, I learnt there is a process to download old exes from steam directly. Deathwrench has a tutorial on the Nexus: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/36278.

There is also a Auto-backup program from CDante. But I just create folders that contain the latest exe and F4SE, as my backup.

Also, @AkumaKuma, if you're using F4SE, you don't want to be launching from Steam. Get Mod Orgasmiser 2, it's the best way to keep your mods... something. FFS. I need to go to bed. Lol. And don't let these guys scare you off mods!

Yes, kinda. First, set F4 to manual updates only. Then, only ever start the game through f4se_loader.exe directly. It bypasses Steam's forced update.
Though make sure that Steam is actually running before launching f4se_loader. If not, it will start steam and make F4 start through it, which you don't want to happen.

If you run f4se_loader through MO2, and you configure it in such a way that it requires steam, it will start steam, then wait for you to click "ok" before actually starting the exe.

I myself just backup the exe (and potentially other files, if they show up as recently changed) right after each update. Haven't needed to roll back for a long time, but better be safe than sorry.

Also, a friendly reminder about a common misconception: Regular esp/esl/esm mods which just use f4se are version-independent. The version-dependent ones are f4se PLUGINS. They contain a .DLL file and do some reverse-engineered in-memory magic themselves. And even some of those are version-independent. Better Console is, for example.

@pra Aha. I assume that is the "only update when I launch option"? I thought you guys still had the old manual update option which they stripped from my client about 2-years ago (total guess, but at least that long). I always launch through the F4SE loader, using MO2, setup so it prompts to open steam, but I could swear it still forced an update. I'm probably wrong though because I don't give it too much thought when I launch it. Lol.

If you guys do have a specific manual update option, I am going to be super jealous. Lol.

Naw nothing special - just run through F4SE and it doesn't update.

Alright everyone, I've returned! I had to do some moving over the last week and am finally playing again.

So, upon further review, it seems I just needed to update my graphics driver. I'm an idiot. Otherwise, F4SE is working and everything is running. I still have crashes, but that'll involve going through each individual thing.

Something I've noticed on Xbox is a weird stutter in sound. Think back to the old walkman cd player. If you bump it too hard the disc will skip for a bit and return to normal. My Xbox game does that. So many odd things going on between my games. Never a dull moment.
