Do I ever/how do I benefit from my settlements?

Just a quick question, not sure if I just haven't progressed through the story enough yet, but will I ever actually generate any materials or caps that I the player can use at any time? How do I benefit from the settlements, as I can't see notice anything coming my way anywhere?

What a fascinating question; I have to admit, I had not thought about it that way.

Well, while I believe there can be some caps from taxes or other specific benefits from a few other plots - the overall "benefit" of the mod - is to enjoy it.
The new features, new ways to build settlements - new buildings and plots to explore.

For me, I love seeing the things I have set up (i.e. I said "put a plot of this type here") take root and grow - seeing the variety of building types upgrade over time, seeing the settlements (and new NPCs they attract) turn into thriving (or struggling...as the case may be) communities.

To me, that growing town is a lot cooler than a bunch of shacks with bunk beds thrown into them and turrets, generators and water pumps everywhere....
(not that I might not still do that ...once in a while).

Now, also, as I enjoy a bit more of challenging survival experience, I also like the more realistic ideas of settlements needing supplies and help, as I find the base game a bit too easy in terms of scrap and caps ... so for me, if you configure (up to each player on their own of course) them to do so, the settlements can actually be a resource and cap drain .... which I enjoy. But hey, I am a bit of a glutton for punishment in that regard (kind of like volunteering to clean the kitchen for the weekend....oh boy).

There is also a sense of discovery in unlocking the advanced plots and capabilities (see the tech tree in the wiki...), and of course, in SS2, the new story unfold.

So, the benefit - I guess it depends on what you want out of it, it can be a different experience for everyone.

My question wasn't a cri
My question wasn't a criticism of the mod. In sim settlements 1, if I remember correctly, plots generated caps and junk in the workshop for you. I was wondering when that started happening again in Sim Settlements 2? Otherwise it is a lot of effort for very little in game returns. Sim Settlements 1 was how I made playing survival mode enjoyable, by having the slog and grind of survival mode reduced by having sim settlement plot stack me up with resources, so I didn't have to spend quite so much time scavenging for them.

It's been a pretty common question around the forums since SS2 launched, to be honest.
Commercial Plots do generate a trickle of caps into that settlement's Workshop, and the Industrial "random junk" subtype (the one you start with) does seem to dump its output into the Workshop too. Farms and Water-generator plots can provide output into the Workshops too, but as best I can tell you need to have a pretty huge surplus far beyond filling up the HUD bar to get any Corn or whatever for yourself. Additionally, there is supposedly a "Tax Collector" subtype of Municipal plot which I presume would generate more caps for your use, but I haven't figured out how to unlock that yet - and there's always that "???" it lists at the far end of the Tech Tree diagram on the wiki to get to as well, I have a feeling that'll be something directly for the player's usage.

i was wondering about the tax collector thing myself. jake mentions it briefly during one of the plot demonstration quests but i havent seen anything about it yet
