I've noticed this periodically through my time in SS2, but my most recent play through on 1.0.12 with full component-level scrap tracking has really driven it home: the totals being shown for each category are not decreasing when resources are used, only incrementing upwards as new components are produced.
Over time, this results in displays like the one attached - Building materials claims to have over 79000 components in it, yet the per-item tallies only show 26, 241. The other categories are the same - Organic Materials has a 13,143 total, but only 6,285 when components are tallied; Machine Parts are 8,986 total and 5,378 tallied; and Rare Materials show 4,050 total but only 1,940 tallied up.
Watching them while sitting in a settlement, the behavior becomes very obvious - the per-component totals go up and down with production and consumption being calculated, but the category totals only ever increase.
This doesn't appear to have a mechanical impact, but it shows as an obvious flaw and could undermine confidence in how resources are tallied.
Tied to this is how resources are displayed when a settlement or settlements lose access to the caravan network. As can be seen in the attached picture, even though I just lost access to half my settlements (bottlenecked on oil, steel and cloth from upgrading too quickly), it appears that I still have access to all the resources from every settlement. Even the manual tallies of components indicates that I should be using more than the available storage: 38,844 out of 16,400 storage available. Either these per-component totals are also not updated correctly when the "holding" settlement is removed from the network, or the storage usage as displayed (15,759/16,400) is wrong, or....both, maybe?
Any way you cut it, there is something wrong with the information being displayed to the user by the HUD "Caravan Network" UI element.
