ASAM message

I noticed the ASAM's are fuzzy when they were implemented. Were they designed to be stored in vaults for reconstruction after the bombs fell or were they being researched before and possibly after the bombs fell? Considering the buildings being created using the materials available after the bombs fell they were engineered to be used after exiting the vault?
You would think if they were engineered before the bombs fell there would be a box or two stored in some of the vaults. Just curious

Official lore time!

ASAM's were made pre-war by RobCo as an alternative for skilled labour. Why pay skilled workers, when an ASAM can direct any Joe Blow instead?! They were to have a grand public release, but then those pesky bombs fell.

As for them building ramshackle junk structures? The ASAM scans an area for available building materials. So if it scans a post apocalyptic wasteland, it's going to have you building with rusted corrugated steel and splintered wood!

So then when it scans Sanctuary, how come we don't get Sanctuary house parts to build with?

I thought about that myself, but then I realised (in an 'out of universe' sense) it'd be both adding more mechanical complexity to a system (the 'which plots can you build' menu) that already has troubles for some people - and it'd provoke a steady stream of "WHY CANT I BUILD THAT COOL HOUSE AT THE CASTLE" complaints too.
Still a good point, though... at the very least, I'm surprised nobody has made a Residential Plot design using those assets that 'unlocks' from owning Sanctuary...

This is actually a good idea. I know there are sanctuary house style walls in the WRK.

One possible way to address this concern is to greatly enhance the themes that are available and enforce certain themes on certain settlements.
I.e. Have a sanctuary theme for sanctuary and set it by default, have all the coastal settlements start with the nautical theme.
This is probably outside the current scope of SS2 but it might be a neat idea to play around with.

This^^^

That's the boring real world answer. But the system is fully open for someone to make their own Sanctuary house kits! (I could be wrong, but I'm fairly sure I've already seen some...)

I am certain I have mentioned it a few times in the past, but that "official lore" reminded me of a thought I keep having regarding the ASAMs.
That being, quickly built structures that any idiot can make with no training? There is no way in any of the Nine Hells that the military wouldnt have wanted some of that.
I am sure that notion has come up in the Writers Room more than once, though... I mean, why DID that guy send the Comm Hub to Station Olivia?

It would seem to make more sense if the Comm Hub would have been being shipped into a government storage area or perhaps to CIT but still locked up in a transport on a highway with the security vehicles in front and behind the transport. The key or terminal access key could have been in a military instillation. But if the military had use of the ASAM's you would think there would be military ASAM's purely for their use. ( considering security of the transport vehicle, I imagine heavy security to unlock the storage. Perhaps a quest within the quest securing different pieces of data or artifacts that would allow you to nullify security measures or tough it out and battle with and try to survive the assault. Imagine battling both lasers and robots that come to life greeting you )
