Why is Aiden following me?

I'm currently on the quest to recruit a nightengale for HQ. Aiden, for some reason, is following me like a companion, but I can't dismiss him, or really do anything.

Beginning to get annoyed... I also can't reassign him to security @ hq.

Is this expected?

I always build Sanctuary myself an normally let SS2 build Red Rocket and Abernathy, but this time I am building all three myself, as I found even with almost all settlements auto building I never had any building materials. And I plan on regulating settlers keeping things smaller until I unlock most plots and get into the HQ quest line.

Then if I can get through the HQ turorial without any bugs I will expand my empire.

Thanks

Let's wrap it up!

Okay I figured I would wrap this up as I really never expected a real answer, especially with all the Bethesda scripts and hundreds of unknown mods trying to run at once.

Basically I restarted a new playthrough and this time I manually built Sanctuary, Red Rocket, and Abernathy, and didn't touch anything else. I kept the settlements basically as small as possible while having enough materials to have stuff to build the HQ when I got to it. I focused entirely on the SS2 questlines except when I had scripted downtime, and then I did some minor exploring and questing.

I have to say that having settlements unlocked, but NOT inhabited really made it easier during the Gunner attacks, I think it gave me a buffer, sure Sactuary, Red Rocket and Abernathy where being attacked on a regular basis but I had an hour or two before attacks instead of the nomal 20 minutes. And all my other settlements have qued up attacks that I just ignore.

Happy to say that everything worked as advertised and Aiden did not follow me except when he was supposed to. I did however run into the bug where the HQ is under staffed during the tutorial, preventing you from completing it. Luckily I found the answer here on the forums, and used the advanced tools on the Holo Tape to fix this apparently known issue.

So off I go, to begin building my empire anew!

Thanks everyone for thier input.

I had Aiden start following me during the quest "War is Good for Business" and then kept following me during "End of the Beginning." It's really annoying because he can catch one of my stray bullets during firefights, and then he becomes hostile and kills me.

I figured I just needed to complete those quests, so he'd stop following me. I even chose his plan instead of Jake's. I thought it worked because in the quest "Moving Day" Aiden was not following me. But after I left Vault 81 and returned to HQ, for the start of "How to HQ." I notice that during the argument between Aiden and Jake over landmines, that Aiden had his weapon out, as I did. When I holstered my weapon, so did he. So now Aiden is following me again, argh!

I loaded an old save, where Martial Law quest was at stage 115. I completed the quest. But once the quest War is Good For Business started. Sadly, at stage 2.00, as soon as I travel anywhere, either by using the map function, or entering a building with an interior location, there was a 50% chance that Aiden would start following me again. I tried a different quest route. I restarted an old save, and when I got to War is Good For Business I went straight to Lupe to escort her. But that didn't work either, because along the way I entered a building and Aiden was there.

So I'm at the point where either I try this all over again with a new game, or I just uninstall SS2 and never suffer thru it again. It's just not playable when Aiden "There's a storm coming" keeps randomly popping up and screwing everything up.

Isn't there a console command to show how many followers the player has? You can also check, if your not on a console, by trying to recruit let's say Piper, Codsworth or another companion. If it allows it, I would guess the npc is 'stuck' in a AI package to follow a given target? Maybe. I'll need someone with more modding experience than myself to correct me on that, if I'm wrong.

Thanks.
I started a new game and have not gotten to Aiden yet. But I'll look into this if this bug shows up again.

Bump on an old thread

I'm having the same problem. My game is not as modded as some of the others in this thread but it's still not close to vanilla + SS2. I've managed to set Aiden as the head of security and everything else is proceeding fine but he's still following me. Would his behavior become corrected if I get security up and running with patrols?

EDIT:

The above-mentioned console command to dismiss aiden as a follower did not work, because he's not loaded as a follower.

Using companion framework's "dismiss ineligible followers" command in the tape does not work.

Loaded an older save file from a few hours back before I liberated Vault 81 from a gunner attack. Aiden began following me around after the quest ended. Maybe check the scripting involved with that quest as well as liberating GNN. Additional bug: If you don't talk to the gunner leader in the overseer's room the quest breaks and gets stuck on mansfield handing you the radio but not proceeding.

EDIT 2:

Using Amazing Follower Tweaks, I was able to assign aiden as a proper follower (follow only, do not manage), then dismissed him from my party. Message displayed said "Aiden is going to GNN", Aiden at GNN has the proper department head dialogue prompts, but for some reason I can't call him on HQ radio. Though I wasn't able to call him before I assigned him as a proper follower using AFT. Temp fix unless this breaks many things in Chapter 3.

Not sure if there was ever a solution found for this, but I just ran into this problem myself. During the quest "How to HQ '' Aiden would start following me right after the dialogue where Mansfield arrives and you are given the quest objective to start cleaning projects, etc. This persisted even after successfully assigning Aiden to be head of security.

Once I noticed this I remembered that Aiden was previously following me more than expected but I didn't really notice as I was focused on SS2 main quest content. I went back through my previous saves and this is what I found.

  • After using a quest skip on "Runners and Gunners" due to an unavoidable ctd, Aiden was correctly dismissed and did not follow me. (Included this just to make clear that I did use a quest skip at one point)
  • Following the quest "Martial Law" Aiden continued to follow me. This persisted through the entirety of "War is Good for Business"
  • With Aiden still following me, I wait until "End of the Beginning" triggers and listen to Jake's Private Frequency. Aiden quite literally disappears into thin air once he says "and come prepared."
  • "End of the Beginning" and "Moving Day" seem to proceed normally as Aiden does not follow me.
  • During "How to HQ" Aiden begins following me right after Mansfield tells the player to begin cleaning projects. This persists even after successfully assigning Aiden to head of security.

I'll attach my plugins.txt as I'm running a ton of mods, but none that should affect companion behavior as far as i know. Also I can provide the saves if needed just let me know.

Edit
Just some extra info. Unlike the above poster I was able to contact Aiden using the HQ Radio even while he was following me. Also I did try things like recycleactor, disable/enable, and resetai which all did not work.

Edit 2
Since I have a save at the start of "How to HQ" but prior to Aiden following me I decided to try to skip the quest just to see what would happen. I used the holotape to skip the quest and waited in Sanctuary while all of the HQ tasks were completed, but at some point while waiting Aiden just popped in out of nowhere and started following me even after the quest successfully completed.

I went ahead and started over with a trimmed down modlist (removed all quest/story mods but left UI, weapons, and some overhauls like Munitions) and I'm not seeing this issue so far. If anyone else with this issue or something similar wants to peek through my plugins.txt to find any common mods then it's right above in my last post.

If you like I can tell you what mods I also use - give you another point of refrence :D

I initially had Aiden, then Salvador (he is more annoying than Aiden with his endless chatter) and just recently Jake all following me. All three! This has ruined the Chapter 3 experience for me.

I run a non-modded F4 except for SS2 and the Unofficial Patch and have never forced skipped any quests. I do have frequent CTD since starting Chapter 3.

Has anyone found how to reset them?

Nope. I did have Shhandy following me until I disabled him after completing all CPD quests. Now Salvadore follows me though I was able to leave him on the HQ roof by not speaking to him & therefore not completing Hostile Waters quest. I then skipped out of the Commonwealth to do Far Harbor instead.

I have over 2500 hours invested in F4, it was becoming stale. SS2 rekindled by enthusiasm for the game, but now with these often reported problems, without fixes, I am close to abandoning SS2. I honesty can't see my self completing Chapter 3 with these 3 unwanted companions. I am not at all confident that a new fresh playthrough will not result in similar problems.

I was recently watching a video of a SS2 Ch3 playthrough and noted that the player was frequently doing hard saves within a single quest (I tend to just do quick saves). I now know why as the devs frequent response to these sort of problems is to reload an earlier save.

Quick saves tend to blow up save size if used a lot, autosaves kinda same. Manual saves are more convenient and instant once you get used to them so I mostly switched to them, but can't speak for everyone.
You may be the first and only person to report 3 (!) unplanned companions. Even 1 is very rare. Not saying its not an issue (it clearly is) but with how rare it occurs, no one knows why it happens or if its even ss2 fault.

I'm wondering if a script is moving them to you (or has them in a follow- temp follower ai) in an attempt to 'trigger' dialog? Like a 'failsafe' to pre-emptively fix a problem where dialog won't trigger unless your near the npc, and somehow since the dialog doesn't trigger (or there isn't any) then script doesn't remove the 'follow' package. Though that's just a guess.

It sure sounds as if an unmarked quest makes them follow you and that quest doesn't go away when it's meant to. This is also just a guess, no idea what it really is. But good to know that even with this crap going on you can finish ch3 :D

Hey guys, i think i find a solution, so, Aiden starts to follow me when
