Why I prefer building settlements myself over city plans, even though I dislike doing it myself.

As per the topic, I have to the conclusion that, until we get city plans that go beyond level 1, it's better to build settlements yourself rather than use the city plans. Here's my reasoning

Settler priorities.

I have set up settlements using the city plans, changing the municipal plot plans for both power and water, or building said plots and changing the building plan accordingly. Yet the settlers are more interested in building stores which the settlement can't support due to low population. I then end up with low food/power/water/defense and I have to run around to each settlement anyway micromanaging until those problems are fixed. I get commerce is important, but without food, they starve. Without water, they'll die from dehydration. Without power..well they can't run anything. And without defense, they're vulnerable to attack. Please don't get me wrong, I love this mod. I've used SS1 extensively in the past. But the settlers in SS! seemed to have better priorities. They knew water, power, food and defense were more important than setting up stores. I'm probably trying to do too much at once. I guess it's not a major thing and I'm probably nitpicking. Just an observation I've made that the settler priorites seem to be a bit odd.

I only used 1 city plan so far, namely Sunshine Tidings, and was under the impression that all the basic needs got filled automatically, as soon as the setllement actually got off the ground. I helped out just a little bit, by providing the settlers with plenty of junk and initially placing some turrets until they would build up their defense plots, but other than that they immediately went for food, water and caravaning themselves, without me interfering...

I’m having the opposite if there’s a farm in site specially the 3x3 that’s where they all go and I’ll have 50 extra food producing.

Could adjust the settings if you don't like the micro. Turn of dynamic needs, for instances, then you don't really need to worry about having enough food, etc.

Kinggath has added plenty in the way of options to let you play the way you want.
I don't mind micromanagement. A turret or 2 here to help out with defense, that sort of thing. But when settlers have the choice of building defense or a shop, mine tend to go for the shop, even though there's not enough defense. Or homes.

Destroy the farm (or farms) you don't need and change the plot to something else.

I have tried a few of the city plans on some of the larger settlements, but really, building is one of my favorite things to do. I like combining sim settlement lots, like the Fish Farm and Chicken Trailer with ones that I set up. Having my guards wonder around the perimeter makes me feel like they aren't falling asleep at the job. I'm not sure yet how Sims2 will work out but I'm hopping this will still work. When I started playing I was rather surprised about this.

I've seen the guards wander around the settlement. And come to think of it, I think I prefer building the settlement mysef. Takes time, but at least I know settements' needs are being met.

Only problem I have now is running out scrap to build sensors.
