Fellow SS'ers

I am on my big play through after learning everything there is to know about mega mod installs. Finally got a stable build and am planning out my settlements.

I have come up with the following splits for how to assign settlers and wanted to get feedback if this will work or will I miss out on game features or quests etc.

I have outsourced recruitment to the Advanced Recruitment Beacon Mod to limit the number of settlers that come to the settlement. Running on Ultra settings things seem to bog down to much once settlers go over 20.

Anyone else find that in the smaller settlements they have to build high rise towers and fill them with internal residential plots to provide enough housing?

Settlement Size: Large (20)
Settler Assignments

Agricultural: 3
Industrial: 2
Advanced Industrial: 3
Commercial: 2
Martial: 2
Recreational: 3
Guard Post: 2
Provisoner/IDEK Station: 1
Adult Entertainment/Other: 2

Settlement Size: Medium (10)
Residential: 10
Agricultural: 1
Industrial: 1
Advanced Industrial: 1
Commercial: 1
Martial: 1
Recreational: 1
Guard Post: 1
Provisoner/IDEK Station: 1

I can only give input on the following two parts of your post:

Within SS is an option to either limit the number of settlers to the game limits (ie Charisma +10 IIRC) or the number of beds in your settlement.

At 23 settlers in The Castle, I’ve found that leaving the system to catch up for 5 or so minutes helps with bogging down issues. I also run Ultra.

Just about every settlement seems to have this issue for me - external plots of all kinds take up a *#%^-ton of room. It is the pain of running a high-Charisma character.

My un-elegant solution has been to do a tower as you say, plus have a small barracks of 5-6 beds or sleeping bags as spillover. Then just pass through the place every couple of game weeks to make another plot if needed.

—edit—
I’ve gotten into the habit of making almost everything internal if at all possible: the external ones take too much valuable real-estate that can no longer be built upwards.

Leaving walking space for settlers can be tricky in a tower, so I usually put a small 1/2 square as a path and for easier snapping the plots. External plots, I try to group them in fours or long rows if possible, with a 1 square gap between blocks/rows.

What I then do is put two-three external commercials at the top of residential towers. Usually including a bar and/or some form of recreational plot. That’s my ceiling, cannot go up farther.

The end result looks heartlessly industrial, yet there’s not many options with large numbers of settlers. My current efforts involve learning how to “bling” things up a bit.

Thanks @Whisper. I like the idea of putting commercial at the top. I am setting up sanctuary and putting a couple of internal plots in the houses and then when I run out of space putting external plots to meet the quota. A problem (Not that I am complaining about the awesomeness of SS @kinggath !!) I am finding is that most of the internal plots are vault themed and don;t really go with Sanctuary from an immersion POV.

I do make use of All Settlements Extended which really helps with plot space. Turns Sunshine Tidings from an average settlement into a wonderland. Soooooo much space.

I was reading somewhere that if there is not sufficient room around plots for Settlers to navigate that will cause the bunch-ups that we see. My previous build of Starlight I had 10 Residential plots in a row and this caused a bit of settler confusion.

With my next run-tgrough I intend to do like you, niche the internal plots into existing buildings. It will be a different bit of trial-and-error for me. I’ll also think seriously regarding All Settlements Expanded.

Yes to the bunching issue - this is a basic game problem, which is why your companions often get in your way. Also don’t forget good, wide stairs as well. That adds more fun when it comes to going up several stories.

I’m thinking seriously of making everything with a 1w front passage that incorporates two sets of stairs going up, and a 2w square as a central plaza-like area with residential or commercial around the outsides of the room. Or perhaps trying a T-junction style where the settlers can only get into their plot from one end. Inelegant yet gives space for the AI bunching problem to resolve.

I’m tending to keep the bar/recreational plots as the exterior ones. Everything else is interior, since they don’t attract the masses of settlers and visitors that those two do.

It would be interesting if SS ever gets a combo external plot, which has residential above the commercial. A single settler then gets assigned to the pair, instead of the current forcing separation of both.

Sounds like we need to have a "Show us your residential towers" forum/competition to see who can come up with the most innovative designs. :)

I find that the wooden 1w stairs are the best from a navigational point of view. Always seem to have issues with other types of stairs.

You have got me thinking about what sort of floor plans work best for Residential . Maybe a plus sign layout where you have the central stairwell 2 x 1 in the middle and then 2x1 as each arm with an internal residential plot. Will have to test that out in Tenpines Buff as soon as I get local leader and start building up settlements.

Another option I have come up with is instead of laying down the 2x2 residential foundation is to put down 2 x 1 Prefab Wooden or Metal Floor + Ceiling and then sticking an internal residential or commercial under them. Works well for having a small bar near a relaxation point when you are short on space.

You need to dig into the Settlements Showcase thread and put up some images. :) Check my thread on the Castle, a W.I.P. ;) (Warning: big images. Not much of a tower either, I self constrained since it’s a military installation. More like a barracks.)

I’m not a personal fan of the prefabs, since they block further upwards building. I like the ceiling-and-floor middle tiles, seem to be easier to deal with for new floors.

LOL I’m still trying to wrap my head around the basics! :shok1 Using the MegaPack and JunkTown too - I must be careful, don’t want to make people have to download a bunch of prereq’s for a city plan.
—edit—
Yes, I do have the CK. Have also been trying to wrap my head around how it works - eventually I plan on doing some 1x1 interior plots if I can figure it.
