Save file size

I noticed the saves are getting bigger and bigger. 2 days ago I was at 50mb, today it's at 65. I only built SS2 settlements tho. Didn't even get to play more complex quests or DLCs. Would suck to have multiple 500mb saves. Will I have a problem if the save gets too big like descreased performance or CTDs?

I am afraid that I don't have an answer to your last question. However, I can confirm that on my first run-though in this game (with SS2), I started with saves around 11mb and ended up, at level 68, with saves of 60mb. This was a frenetic run-through to the destruction of the Institute and BoS and with a heathy caravan route and settlement list.

I've read reports of people having really big saves (hundreds of mb) and they thought that's what caused CTDs. Their guess doesn't necessarily imply correlation since FO4 can get unstable for a lot of reasons, so I wanted so see the opinion of people here since there are many veteran players.

Every object you build in the game is stored in the save file. This includes settlements, crafted items, items equipped to NPCs, anything you have stashed in a container and all script data. The size of your save file reflects this. If you have every settlement built to 300% of the limit, I would expect your save to be fairly large.

The only thing I have noticed over the years is that the bigger the save file, the longer the load times. I do not know if there is a magic number where your game will explode if you go over it.

It will top out, there's only so many settlements you can build.
Prebuilding around 30 settlements to level 3 in SS1(It will be the same for SS2) added about 55mb to the save. So including everything else added by the game, and a couple of hundred hours play time I was hitting 90mb saves without issue.

Any save getting that big is already fucked, it's not the file size causing the CTD, it's whatever is bloating the save to that size.

I see, then I should be fine in the future if I'll be doing a full playthrough and having most SS2 Rotc settlements built if no mod is messing up my save.
I remembered a few years ago this did happen to my modded Skyrim save... Basically infinite loading screens or CTDs. Modding Bethesda games is not for the faint of heart :grin.
