I made this account just so I could give this suggestion.
When I play SS, I always make Sturges work at a Industrial Plot because I figure it would make sense for him, because he tinkers.
Conqueror implemented role and Levels systems to soldier and I thought to myself: "How cool would be if a assigned a role to individual settlers and they would be auto assigned to plots that fit their roles!" While working, they would rank up and perform better at the plots they are assigned to. I figured it could unbalance stuff if you had a bunch of high level dudes working plots and getting a lot of food/scrap or vendor with a lot of caps, but I think that's fun and would love to play with it.
