You may find that some optional objectives will not appear if you have previously contacted the Abernathy family.
1. Go and talk to the Stranger, whereupon Old Paul will burst in and demand your presence in a hostage situation.
2. You or your companions may get distracted by killing bloatflies before you can find the hostage situation.
3. Enter a dialogue with the Raider gunman who points a gun at you.
a. You may wish to bribe him with 100 caps to release the hostages.
b. If you have the Action Boy/Girl perk, you may wish to interrupt the dialog to start combat.
c. There may be other ways to resolve the dialogue.
4. If necessary, survive a fight.
5. After any enemies have been dealt with, talk to the hostages to release them. (This may glitch out and lead to them offering to trade items with you while they are still tied up.)
6. Engage in a dialogue with the Stranger, who will probably tell you his name is Jake.
