Thanks for clicking. I've spent 20 hours trying to narrow the issue down.

New installation on a new computer.
  • If I launch through MO2 using the F4SE launch option, I get the $no_FSE error
  • If I launch using the F4SE loader in the Game folder, I get the warning that "such and such mod is missing" for every mod.

F4SE is latest version. I've tried launching things as administrator and turning off Windows Defender.

Any ideas on how I should try to address this?

Thank you.

I replied in the other thread (one about no addons registered or whatever) but probably best to keep it here. In short, the first option is the right one when using MO2. If F4SE is not working, something went wrong with its installation. I'd also check if the game and f4se versions are compatible (should be the case if you just downloaded the game and went with the f4se link on their site).

Also, it almost sounds like MO2 isn't sym-linking the files to the game at runtime. That's why when you start your game manually and it loads your load order, it says plugins are missing. This is because MO2 dynamically 'links' these files at runtime- and they're not located in the game folder, but in another separate folder. When the game starts normally, it looks for files to be in the game's installation folder(including the data folder).

That, based on the both sides of what you describe, sounds like it could be the problem.

I think I might have this fixed. Lots of screwing around and editing the custom.ini file.

The only weird thing now is there is still a $ symbol in front of MCM and some of it's components. It still seems to work though. I can call the F4SE version from within game.

I also had to disable Advanced Animation Framework for some reason.

Thanks for putting in some time and attention. I appreciate it.

Weird, I have AAF and it doesn't cause any issues. Unless you're using something incompatible with it. Now, some (or a lot of) mods require archive invalidation (aka adding 2-3 lines to the ini) so it might be a good idea but you only do it once. You might want to disable profile specific ini's but not sure how important that is. As for the $MCM thing, I had that too and I think that was some weird translated language version quirk. Somehow that fixed itself (or I did and can't remember how..).

Hi. Me again. :)

I believe I have found the source of my headaches.

I did not realize that MO2 was using a different fallout.ini file than the one in the Documents/MyGames/Fallout4 folder.

Unfortunately, when I try to edit the one located in C:\Users\wheik\AppData\Local\ModOrganizer\Fallout 4\profiles\Default , the game crashes before getting to the main menu. The edit I have tried to make is to change [ARCHIVE] sResourceDataDirsFinal=STRINGS\ to [ARCHIVE] sResourceDataDirsFinal=

I've tried it with and without adding [Archive] bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
I've tried it from within MO2 using the ini editor function and manually using notepad.

MO2/Profiles/Automatic Archive Invalidation is grayed out so I cannot check that.

Am I missing something?

Example Symptom - Clothing mods show up invisible
Solved if launching directly with Steam with mod installed manually to Data folder and fallout.ini edited for modding.

Thank you.

To save you some headache with some mods, both of those lines need to be in the ini (well, all 3 lines). If using MO2 I guess you either use its own tool or disable profile specific inis (the link below explains it better). What you need to add is

[Archive]
bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
sResourceDataDirsFinal=

The file you're editing is Fallout4Custom.ini

You might want to refer to Buffout instructions https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/articles/3115
even though they're generally for Buffout (you probably want to use that with F4SE if you're not), will be helpful either way, with the list of problem mods and what not

Thanks, guys. I am still working on this problem. I bought a new PC and haven't gotten F4 working correctly yet. F4 is my fave game with over 5k hours played so obviously I want to fix this. I'll even pay a super nerd to come fix it if I have to.

Current problem- Clothing mods are invisible and some face textures of mod companions don't show up, but others do. I think it has to do with MO2 and ini files.
I'm not very smart and my cat refuses to help.

Are you on Steam? If so you should start with validating your files through the launcher.
Invisible clothing typically comes from missing meshes. Id suggest redownloading and reinstalling the mod.
Another common cause is mismatched body types. For example make sure to get the CBBE version if your using CBBE.

No worries - Im happy to help. I may not know much but at least the price is right. :P

If your interested in Buffout's crash log I can post one to show you the kind of info it produces. Because of the crash logs its one of my must have mods.

If you are running several clothing mods at once, it may result in naked NPCs, if that's what you're referring to. Changing their places can help sometimes, otherwise they're probably incompatible unless some fo4 edit manipulations. Other than that, I disabled profile specific inis and used MO2's own thing to add the above lines and never looked back, everything works more or less fine.
For example make sure to get the CBBE version if your using CBBE.
that's a thing yeah. if using cbbe and armor/clothes mods that don't support cbbe, you might run into some weirdness (like a big nipple on the belly and a missing shoulder). ss2 itself has this too (evident with half naked outfits like Gremlin's).

Thanks, Skywise. If I load the game without MO2, the clothes show up fine. This is why i am focused on MO2 and ini files.
Ive not heard of that particular bug. If you dont mind let me know how you fixed it just in case I do run into it.

Once you get Mo2 working right, I also recommend "Gamer Poets" videos/tutorials.

The Mo2 ini editor just overwrites or adds to the unedited base game ini's.

After that is done, then this link below might make using CBBE in Mo2 a lot easier / better for you.

The way older YouTubers have had folks install bodyslide with Mo2 forced the user to change folders between viewing and building outfits, "BUT WHEN YOU BUILD THEM (Switching folders), THEY WOULD NOT HAVE THE TEXTURES." This fix "fixes that." Before Sirlach showed me this, I was switching folders as that was the only way shown in other tutorials.

@RayBo. I think I may have stumbled upon my problem in the comments section of your video. This problem started when I bought a new computer and now I see my MO2 is installed to an appdata folder. I don't even know what that means, but people are saying that is their problem. I will update you after exploring more.

Update: No, that wasn't it.

This is how I do it "clean install" of a game.
It is not recommended to change these folders once you start to set up a profile/game in MO2.

IDK, I thought the below might help?

Solution
I finally stumbled on the solution to this problem

I added
bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
sResourceDataDirsFinal=

Directly to the Fallout ini and not the custom ini.
