I have been testing with this item but it does not seem to add anything to the work shop. Should it add extra to the work shop or just cover the settlers needs?

It doesn't explicitly add any items to the workshop, it just covers settlers needs - it should operate exactly like any of SS regular agricultural plots, but with a slight output bonus at the expense of some power.
I don't know if SS basic agri plots actually produce anything in the workshop or not, but if it does I think it is on a "daily" type basis.

I never tested the others to see i was sure they worked the same as base game crops.
