I have decided to give Jamaica Plain a shot!

I make zero promises of completion, however I am challenging myself to give this a try. Jamaica Plain has always been an interesting location for me, so that shall be where I sow my creative seeds. Watch this space as I attempt to place all the necessary mods, plots and idle markers to make my Jamaica Plain hum!*

*settlement may or may not hum, results may vary. consult your doctor if settlement starts yodeling or screaming incoherently.

UPDATE: Holy heckaroni and cheese, having looked at competing settlements my J-Plain is looking quite compact and... tidy. I'm not one hundred on how well I'm gonna fare in comparison! That said, I am quite proud of how my build looks. Eighty percent of the way done!

UPDATE #2: It is done. My L3 build!

Behold, Jamaica Plain! This small settlement has beds for fifteen, though not all live and sleep in high-quality conditions. Jamaica Plain is defended from the south from raiders and gunners by its elevated towers, and from the north by both turrets and the surrounding buildings.

An uneasy peace is kept between all parties through mutually assured destruction. Word spread by traders and heard by raiders is that the abandoned house at the corner of the settlement has been turned into a massive dirty bomb, capable of wiping out Jamaica Plain entirely and heavily irradiating nearby Hyde Park.

This settlement is small, but mighty. Walled in, and prepared to burn it all to the ground if things go awry, the settlers live in a state between safety and paranoia that the next attack could be the last stand.

[contains .esp, .esl and save game. I use a lot of mods in my game but none that affect the settlement in any way so fingers crossed you'll be A-OK. If not... uh, hm...]

On that note, I do have a question. I want to have specific landmarks in my build upgrade between each level - the rules and guidelines specify the best course of action is to aim to build for a L3 settlement and then reverse-engineer L2-L1-Foundation from there.

Is it possible to do the opposite? Build the foundation, then L1, L2 and L3 after that? My intention is that there will be improvements across each level to show evolution, as opposed to one final product slowly coming together like a Lego set.

You can do it in whichever order you like, but it will become immensely more difficult that way. One of the tricky parts of City Plans, is that you can't relocate plots between levels. So if you design your levels 1 and 2, and then find out that level 3 a plot is taking up some vital space - there's no way to move or remove it unless you go back to your earlier levels and move it to the EXACT same position and rotation - as the City Plan code uses that information to prevent duplication.

If you want to do it the way you described, I'd recommend getting your L3 roughed out first and then using that save to build your other levels as well so that you know your plots are locked in to their positions.

From what I've read, there's no reason why you can't do that, as long as you never move any plots from one level to the next. City plans won't recognize that they've moved; instead it'll place a new plot at the new location and keep the old one in place.

Or I'll take so long making sure I was saying what I intended to say that Kinggath'll get there first. =P

Okay, is there a fresh link leading to the how-to for building F-L1-L2 city plans? Tried to follow the hyperlink in the Contest Rules titled 'helpful guide on how to make lower levels quick' and got an error message :/

Just updated the rules to fix the link. We just completely redesigned the forum layout last week and must have changed the location of that thread during the process.

As someone basically just staring out, I found it much easier to start with L4 first, even if only to make doing up a Scrap Profile easier; I reckon it's worth reverse engineering ur L4 down to L1.

Okay, this isn't SS' fault but for some reason there's a line running east-west through Jamaica Plain and every time I cross it heading north it instantly closes my workshop.
Also the Town Meeting Gavel doesn't scrap anything in the settlement when I use it.

Does anyone know what could be causing these issues?

EDIT: Never mind that last point, I'm an idiot - an impatient one at that.
DOUBLE EDIT: Beantown Interiors. Of course that's what was causing it, I don't know why I didn't think of that earlier. No panic, we all good.

Are there any rules as to when one can upload images, or is it just when you're done building your L3 build?

you can upload some WIP pics ,
but your final 10 must be added to your first post in this thread when they are done.

I'm very sad that I can't seem to find any street lights that project a decent amount of light, unless I'm looking in the entirely wrong subcategories for them... mainly I'm sore that I can't find those old timey colonial-style street lamps in neither project blueprint nor the vanilly build categories ;___;

Also, is there anything more satisfying than pulling down a big section of your build and creating something even better in its place? I doubt it :cool

As long as they non DLC lights that should be fine.

I think so? But I'm a first time builder myself so someone else might know that better. :x

EDIT: Or Uituit could get in here at the speed of light and clear it up.
