How to Work With ResidentialPlot Limitation?

After a few days into my new SS adventure it's become apparent that the main bottleneck limiting settlement population size is the requirement that incoming settlers have a SS residential plot.

For big settlements like Sanctuary, not a problem.

But I'm working on Red Rocket just using interior plots, and after placing 7 residentials have found that I've got no choice but to build additional floors in containing structures, in order to place more interior plots, as exterior 3x3's gobble up way too much space.

Before SS, I'd place beds in hallways; or create dorms to pack in up to 25 settlers in pretty much every settlement. But with SS it doesn't look like that's going to be possible. Or will it?

Are there any residential plots that can house 2 settlers instead of just one?
Is there a way to disable or modify the SS residential requirement so that at least some non-SS beds will apply?

Any advice most appreciated.

Incoming settlers do not need a SS residential plot. You can also assign settlers to beds like with vanilla, and they will also count as a "home" for the purpose of the Commercial Requirement.

The benefit of using regular beds is that Sim Settlements treats them like level 3 residential plots so they don't restrict commercial upgrades. However, the downside is that regular beds do not generate any tax revenue for the settlement.

It is generally advised that you use a mix of SS plots and regular beds, especially for larger settlements, purely for technical reasons--too many SS plots can cause performance and stability problems. Though YMMV based on your precise gaming platform.

The non-SS beds are fine. :good
I use them all the time in smaller settlements. :declare

If you use WSFW you can turn off the bed sheltered requirement as the vanilla game is often glitched :crazy in regard to beds and shelter.

There are of course some SS plots that cater for more than 1 settler per 2x2 plot floor space. (Shameless plug!!!). A bunkhouse for example........

However, be careful regarding how many beds or settlers you decide to use at say RR. I at one point had 21 beds/settlers as a test settlement. Sometimes it didn't end well.

With my heavily modded game, I've regularly maxed out all--or almost all--settlements with 25 settlers. All working and with needs met. But SS makes things more tricky. Especially when transitioning from a 100% non-SS settlement.

The other reason to use a mix of beds and plots is because a settler will not move into a plot until they have a job. When residential plots are upgrading the bed it not available.

If the beds are not available for longer than a minute that would actually be a bug. The residential plots should have beds (or a sleeping bag by the scaffolding if there isn’t space inside the plot) at every building stage, not only at the levels (1, 2 and 3). If not, this would cause issues for players with realistic build times on when the plots upgrade. I know we have missed a stage at a time or another, but we try to fix them as soon as a player notifies us. If the player has script lag it can take up to a minute for the bed/sleeping bag to spawn in, but shouldn’t take longer than that.

Do it is a matter of certain residential plot missing a bed when the construction step is taken?

I noticed it happen, I just thought it was supposed to work that way. Since it kinda makes a bit of sense.

Should probably start a new thread on this...but as a new 3-in-1 + Conqueror user it would be REALLY nice if 100% of plots in the build menu: a) Had access opening(s) listed (e.g., "LFRF"); and b) Listing in "Building Plan Previews" mod (to get an actual visual).

In fact, making those two a requirement for all new and existing plot add-ons would improve the SS experience immeasurably.

Adding beds to the building stages is mentioned in the tutorials but it's easy to miss when making house plots. If you find any that we have made (Wasteland Venturers), please let us know :)

Wasteland Ventures is among the best of all 3-in-1 addons because it lists specific access points for each plot, as well as provides visual preview compatibility. Because of these two factors, I find myself using WV plots far out of proportion to other plots.

Glad you find the entry points in the plot names helpful! The previews actually come from another mod ("Sim Settlements Building Plan Previews"), but it hasn't been updated for some years so many plots are missing. For the next update we have added them to show for all our plots by default, no extra mods needed.

Yeah well it aint your mods, I do not think I have found any issues with your plots. I have been using them since you started with them.

Little House in the Wasteland, Chosen One, and The Wrath of Kinggath are my favorite plots. Especially the last two in a raider and vassal outposts.

I would love to see that. I used to use the old preview mod until I had so many plots that had no preview, I knew the plots, and people started marking the abbreviations.

Is there a tut for that? Sounds like a plan!
@pra figured out good values for the transforms so that the regular Level 1 meshes can be used as previews, I’ll show you on discord. Means that extra meshes that increase the file size of the mod are no longer needed. But I’m a bit concerned about how previews will affect the building plan menu load time, especially on Xbox. We’ll see!

It's not perfect, using the L1 mesh as preview, but it's better than nothing IMO. Of course, no dynamic objects will show up.
Also, I'm not sure what to do for interior plots. I never built one, but I think most people don't even have stage models in there.

I am scared of mods which add previews, since (last time I used it), it added overrides of the mod's MISCs. I have also tried to make an xEdit script which creates such a patch, but for some reason, it ended up messing up the addons I had...

I have 2 preview transforms in my mod, one for single-story and one for two-story buildings. Just copy the data over if you want to.

Also, my solution for anything xbox-related is to simply not care for xbox :D

I never reached that point, but I wonder what the critical point would be. If I build up all vanilla settlements with pure SS and at average 20 settlers, I would end up with around 1400 plots in total.

Or I could decide to build up the Sanctuary/Red Rocket/Abernathy-triangle with 3x30 settlers = 180 plots and sometimes probably all hosting cells loaded a once.

I presume that pushing scenario #2 to far will kill me long before I could push scenario #1 to far, is this correct ?
