How much of the questline can you complete after rescuing the MM from concord?

does any part of the questline unlock only after Main Storyline triggers? I progressed to taking the castle but I want to finish the Sims 2 quest line before working on the main story. Can I do that?
 
Technically, the only part of SS2's questline that links to the 'vanilla' main quest is that bit where you first meet Preston And Pals - and even then you don't actually HAVE to rescue them, only have that first conversation where Preston and Sturges tell you about the Power Armor on the roof. You're not required for SS2's questline to go back in and tell Preston And Friends to move to Sanctuary, can just leave 'em in the museum forever if you want.
There's other "optional content" - more Unique Settlers, mainly - that triggers based off vanilla main quest progression.

You don't even need to talk with them! You can just leave right after clearing all the raiders from inside the museum!

Too true. I just cannot resist the call of the Perception Bobblehead, though.
 
if I could just have Sturges and Mumma I would leave the rest in there.
 
If I recall there are lines that do reference the Main story quest and other side quests.
Nothing hard tied, or consequential. Simply just suggestions on things to do inbetween SS2 quests, rather then waiting around.
If you played Conqueror, you might remember Jammer recommending helping out Wolfgang at Drumlin Diner. That kinda thing.

Its perfectly fine to start SS2's story after playing hours, doing regular FO4 stuff.
 
IIRC you don't even have to do any of the main story, unless you want to. You might be able to unlock The Castle as a settlement just by going there, although I've always unlocked it as part of The Minutemen questline

Yeah you can, although you cant get into the armory without Ronnie Shaw's quest (since for some reason that gate thing is unscrappable)
