How do designers test settler pathing?

Hi all,

I noticed the placement of navigation aids by city plan creators but how do you effectively test settler pathing? Do you pick a settler and tell them to go somewhere and see if they stop?

Even if I use some of the manual in-game navigation path objects available in other mods I often can't get settlers to budge from whatever ditch they are standing in.

Personally, I'd like to see the placeable navigation paths in the regular workshop menu without the builder toolkit. They'd probably be helpful for regular players too.

We send dogmeat to a spot through the pathing, and see what happens! It's all a highly technical process! hah!

Really any companion will work, they tend to follow directions slightly better than settlers.. well... sometimes...

It also depends on what path you want for them. For a caravan path, directing a sentry bot is fairly good as they have a larger collision box that can match up to a brahman fairly well. Otherwise like what ruinedworld said, use dogmeat or another companion and direct them.

When I tested my bridge mod I walked over the bridge backwards so I could watch my companion cross over it. Of course that put me at risk of falling over the edge and swimming with the mirelurks and murderdolphins but such is the price we mod authors pay. ;)

I know the VANS perk lets you see the navigation path in VATS. It'd be cool if that could be leveraged somehow.

Give those Institute Synths jetpacks! It'll be like fighting Mandilorians!
...
I'd expect to see them with their jet packs on full flame while upside down with their heads in the dirt.

I think technically you could use VANS with the Find Owner on plots as it tags the plot as well as the settler. Though I've honestly never used VANS, so I don't know what its limitations are.
