Question Glitches with plots. SS1

Hi! I just downloaded the mod yesterday, and I love it so far! Although I’ve noticed a few odd glitches. I saw in a video detailing the mod, that there were widgets/bars on the side of their screen which detailed things about the settlement. Mine doesn’t have that. Also, when placing down a plot there’s no base for the structure. No floors I mean, and when I place interior plots, they have no walls so signs are left floating in the air. I’m typing this on my phone so I can’t send any pictures unfortunately.. I’m just curious is there a way for me to fix this?

This is a link to the SS1 wiki, it has sections covering these issues and many others, that are better than what I can type out. :wink

In short, the widgets are covered in the HUD meters section.... need HUDFramework for them to appear.
Normal plots do not have a foundation of there own, the foundations are a separate buildable item in the SS workshop menu - the plots will snap to them.
Interior plots are designed for you to build the walls yourself, or use existing buildings (like the old houses in Sanctuary).
Have Place Everywhere REALLY REALLY helps!

Hey!! Thanks! Sorry I didn’t answer back! I see now that there’s no problems! Thanks for the information!! /genuine

However there’s another issue now.. ever since I started upgrading the homes and businesses my game has been crashing. It crashes whenever I’m in Sanctuary and oddly in Diamond City as well. My two favourite places to be. I was using a mod where I can invest so I could make them upgrade almost instantly. I’m not sure if that’s what’s causing issues or if it’s just Sims Settlements, but I don’t know how to make it stop.. people have suggested a mod caller Buffout 4, but my laptop won’t allow me to download an offsite requirement in order for Buffout to work. I’m honestly really sad, kind of freaked out, and I really don’t want to uninstall Sims Settlements because I love this mod so much. I’ve put so much work into Sanctuary and I don’t want to destroy it all. I think it’s too late for me to reload either.. my earliest save before the mod was at the start of the game, and I’m at level 25 now.. what should I do?

Well Buffout is the best way that I know of to trackdown likely causes of unexpected crashes. Maybe ask around to friends, see if someone can download the needed files to a USB stick for you to get the files off of, maybe??

Crashes can be fixed sometimes by juggling around your load order, could be a couple mods that are not playing nice together.
Crashes can be because mods have been removed from your game.... never remove mods until your getting ready to start a completely new game.
Crashes can be because your system is overloaded, especially in high resource consuming areas... try lowering the settings of the detail levels.

Just some ideas... catching the ctd is a pain to do.

I don’t know anyone who could help me download it.. it’s this specifically that I can’t download. My laptop literally told me it couldn’t.. and even if it did, I don’t know if I grabbed the right one or what it could do to my computer. I was scared. I have autism and I don’t understand a lot of things.. I actually have been removing some mods but I don’t think they affect Sanctuary or Diamond city.. I use Vortex and it tells me if there’s conflict and it hasn’t. Sorry if I sound rude I’m not trying to be, I’m just really sad..

Honestly, I would start with SS2. There are a lot of reasons, but mostly it is the current version of the mod that is more actively supported and has a story better suited to new users. There is a guide to get started here:

Next, just FYI. Uninstalling mods after a game has started will almost always break your game. Please don't do that. You can install mods then uninstall them after a game has started but then you need to go back to a save that is before you installed the mod that you just uninstalled.

Lastly, I am by no means a windows expert but Visual CC++ is a windows app, not a mod that has anything to do with vortex.
I suspect, but don't know that it may be already installed. To check:

1. Click your windows start icon on the lower left of your desktop
2. Click the gear icon for settings
3. In settings click apps

From there scroll down to Microsoft:
That will show you if it is installed.
Below is a screenshot of what mine looks like
1654410095447.png

At least this will show you if it is already installed on your computer.

Lastly, restarting your game no matter how much progress you have made in the game is the price we all must pay to learn how to mod a game to a stable state.

I can only suggest what I have already said above and suggest you carefully read the instructions in the wiki link I posted above.
Any mods you might want to add beyond what is in that link might be not a good idea until you are comfortable that you have a stable game running.
Most other mods you can add later anyway.

Good luck and welcome to game modding.

I’ll try my best to do everything stated here. I can’t download SS2 though as I’m intimidated by its size unfortunately.. plus I’ve heard it causes a lot of lag. If I get a better computer I will definitely get that mod however. Mine is pretty good for a laptop as Fallout 4 runs with pretty much no lag thankfully, but I still think having an actual computer could be better for a mod as big as that. You are right though, if starting over means the game will run properly than okay. One thing though, I’ve seen something called The Triangle of Death. Do you think that might have something to do with the issues?

Yeah, it can. It is often an issue when RR, Sanctuary, and Abernathy have been overbuilt, scrapping mods start to bring down the game engine, or too many Settlers and such.

I have a very good set up and I normally stick to fewer NPCs.

Just me - I normally try to stay around:
20 Sanctuary
8 RR
10 Abernathy
+/- here or there

That is just what I do with my system and the mods that I run. It can be a little different each playthrough but a good suggestion is to stick to only building up one or two of them and not to build them up all at once.

I normally wait until mid-game to see how my performance is doing before deciding how far to go with them.

Once the "game engine" starts sucking wind it goes to pot very quickly and can catch players off guard with studdering, low FPS, and crashes.

Each player, system, and mod set-up is different so keep it small in the triangle and maybe go with just one settlement until you know what your set-up can handle?

I managed to download Buffout, and I lowered the settings. It actually seemed to work for a bit, but then it crashed again in The Castle.. I tried to check for a crash log and there’s none. I don’t know what I did wrong. I thought I downloaded Buffout correctly.. this is kind of making me want to give up and never touch Fallout again. The crashes scare me too much. That’s why I stopped playing Skyrim and it hurts that I can’t play. It’s stupid but I’m honestly feeling really heartbroken about this.. doesn’t help that my depression has been getting worse. I’ve been using these games to calm down.

Also I thought I’d mention what my computer is in case that helps. It’s an Acer Nitro 5 gaming laptop it has 16GB of RAM, but I can’t quite remember what the CPU is. I think it might be i5 9500? That’s a real number right? Sorry I really can’t remember..

You could try downloading and installing the Microsoft Visual Studio C++ Redistributables that are linked in that page as a last step. If that does not solve your issue, then you could take a look at the full guide on Nexus (by the way @Cessori your link to that page in your installation guide leads to Buffout 4's page).

Here are the instructions found on Nexus for you convenience (I've removed some extra information):
BUFFOUT 4 INSTALLATION - PART 1 | YOU NEED TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THE FOLLOWING

I. Fallout 4 Script Extender |
Installation:
Download the latest build (0.6.21) and extract all contents inside f4se_0_06_21 folder into Fallout 4's Installation Folder, where Fallout4.exe is located.

II. Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables AIO |
Installation:
Download the latest release and run VisualCppRedist_AIO_x86_x64.exe

III. DirectX End-User Runtimes June 2010 |
Installation:
Download the main package and run it, then select any location to have it extracted. After it's extracted, run DXSETUP.exe.

IV. Address Library for F4SE Plugins |
Installation:
Manually download the main file and place its version-1-10-163-0.bin file into the Fallout 4\Data\F4SE\Plugins folder (create it if there isn't one).

BUFFOUT 4 INSTALLATION - PART 2 | INSTALL THESE FILES MANUALLY (WITHOUT A MOD MANAGER)

1.
Download both the Buffout Main File and TBB Redistributables File, then extract their contents somewhere.

2. Place Buffout4.dll, Buffout4.toml and Buffout4_preload.txt into the Fallout 4\Data\F4SE\Plugins folder.

3. Place tbbmalloc.dll into your Fallout 4 Installation Folder, where Fallout4.exe is located.
(If you have the same dll from Creation Kit Fixes, use it to overwrite the one from Buffout 4.)

4. Open the Buffout4.toml file with a text editor, then change the following parameters if needed:

- If you'd like faster switching between your Controller and KB/M, set the InputSwitch line to true.
(Can rarely cause weird behavior. Not needed if you aren't using a Controller / Gamepad.)

- If you have mods that already enable achievements, set the Achievements line to false.
(If you still have problems getting Achievements, remove those mods and only let Buffout do it.)

- If you have Baka ScrapHeap mod installed, set the MemoryManager line to false.
(Then go to Fallout 4\Data\F4SE\Plugins, open BakaScrapHeap.toml and set ScrapHeapMult to 4)

- If you have Looks Menu mod installed, set the F4EE line to true.
(Customization Compendium can also sometimes cause similar bugs.)

To check if Buffout 4 is actually working, you can inspect xSE Plugin Preloader.log inside your Fallout 4 install folder or f4se.log inside Documents\My Games\Fallout4\F4SE folder after running the game at least once. You should see a message that Buffout 4 and other DLL mods loaded correctly. Look for any reported errors or missing dependencies. (Ignore all Unknown QueryInterface 00000007 messages, these are normal). Rarely, some crashes won't produce any valid crash logs.

Modder's resource that expands the scripting capabilities of Fallout 4. This is also a hard requirement for the vast amount of other mods.
Installation: Download the latest build (0.6.21) and extract all contents inside f4se_0_06_21 folder into Fallout 4's Installation Folder, where Fallout4.exe is located.

II. Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables AIO | All-In-One package that contains program libraries required for any and all PC games.
Installation: Download the latest release and run VisualCppRedist_AIO_x86_x64.exe

III. DirectX End-User Runtimes June 2010 |
Old DirectX libraries that can help prevent audio related crashes.
Installation: Download the main package and run it, then select any location to have it extracted. After it's extracted, run DXSETUP.exe.

IV. Address Library for F4SE Plugins | Provides version independent resources required to run several important mods, including Buffout 4.
Installation: Manually download the main file and place its version-1-10-163-0.bin file into the Fallout 4\Data\F4SE\Plugins folder (create it if there isn't one).

(Customization Compendium can also sometimes cause similar bugs.)

BUFFOUT 4 INSTALLATION - PART 3 | ENABLE ARCHIVE INVALIDATION / LOOSE FILES SETTINGS
This setting allows the game to load files outside of official BA2 archives. Without this, many mods won't work or will outright crash the game.

Vortex - Archive Invalidation should be automatically enabled in latest versions, otherwise enable it manually or through BethINI.
MO2 - The integrated setting usually doesn't work properly, so you should always enable it manually or through BethINI.
  • MO2 by default uses separate custom ini files, I strongly recommend that you disable this functionality.
  • Simply navigate to Profiles [Ctrl + P] in MO2 and uncheck Use Profile Specific INI Files
  • Now the game will use ini configuration files from the Documents folder.

Enable With BethINI (Recommended)
1.) Download the latest standalone version here.https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/4875?tab=files
2.) Extract it somewhere on your disk, but NEVER directly inside your game installation folder.
3.) Run BethINI.exe, check both Load Loose Files and Enable File Selection, then Save and Exit.

Or Enable Manually
Navigate to Documents\My Games\Fallout 4 folder and add these lines to Fallout4Custom.ini (and yes, sResourceDataDirsFinal needs to remain blank).
[Archive]
bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
sResourceDataDirsFinal=
[Launcher]
bEnableFileSelection=1

AFTER INSTALLATION

If the game fails to start / open
, copy tbbmalloc.dll from TBB Redistributables and paste it into your C:\Windows\SysWOW64 folder. (Admin privileges required.)
If game fails to launch yet again, open xSE Plugin Preloader.xml and change <LoadMethod Name="OnProcessAttach"> to <LoadMethod Name="OnThreadAttach">
(xSE Plugin Preloader.xml is only available if you manually installed this mod. Otherwise, delete this xml file and IpHlpAPI.dll if you still can't get the game to start.)

All of this sounds really confusing.. there’s so many steps and I’m worried one wrong move with all these mystery apps could destroy my computer. I’m very sorry if I’m wasting everyone’s time here.. if I do switch to Sims Settlements 2 will it crash less? I’m scared of performance issues though.. but I really just want to play the game and have this great mod with it without crashing. Installing Buffout looks so confusing and I’m scared if I do it by myself I’ll cause far more problems than fix.

I went ahead and trimmed down my post above, but installing Buffout 4 is no simple task. A simple installation (read: only a few mods) on a freshly installed game is your best bet. Can you show us your load order? There should be a way to get a plugins.txt file on Vortex. We could take a look.

I’m sorry I don’t know how to show you my load order.. I took some pictures with my phone though! I’m sorry if this doesn’t help.

This post shows how to get your load order.

If the folder in the video is hidden then this post with show you how to unhide it.

Mods like Buffout can be helpful but are nearly made irreverent when issues are caused by "scrapping mods."
Scraping mods.jpg

Mods like this can be a big contributor to the game crashing. You should not play Fo4 + SS with them unless you really know what you are doing.

Like I said in an earlier post.
"Any mods you might want to add beyond what is in that link might be not a good idea until you are comfortable that you have a stable game running.
Most other mods you can add later anyway."

At this point my suggestion is to follow these instructions:

Don't add anything else. With that LO folks can be the most helpful.

Lastly, it is common for new users to over-mod their games. They do things like add "scrapping mods" or have load order issues then try to solve the issues they create with even more mods that are actually more advanced than what a new person to modding understands. It normally does not end well.

It isn't that folks are not willing to help, it just becomes very hard to do so when user expectations are beyond what took many of us years to understand ourselves.

I just think you are trying to hard to do too much. I ran Fo4 for years successfully without Buffout 4. I think you can too.

Start small, take little bites.

Okay. Thanks for the help. If getting rid of the scrapping mods are a good start then I’ll try it. I only got it because there’s so many ugly bushes and plants around Sanctuary and I wanted to get rid of them so they wouldn’t clip through buildings and cement so much. Thanks again for your advice. I’ll try to follow the steps you sent as well, but since I am easily overwhelmed and have really bad anxiety I think I’ll start small. Thank you. /genuine

:friends After you get a stable game.
This is the one I would suggest if you feel you need a scrapping mod. It is well tested alongside SS.

Go slow, start small. :yess
We all started that way.
