Fun Fact- Bethesda is going to use this same antiquated Game Engine for Starfield.
Yeah, I am not sure I have a problem with the engine itself. It is a dichotomy, it is sub-optimal for stability but IMHO that problem may make it more adaptable for modders. I am way too nice and too stupid here, for purely selfish reasons. FO4 to me is great because of what modders have done to it. To me, Bethesda is redeemed in part due to them. I am not the market though.
The aging engine, one way or another will be resolved by the in-mass twitch / console users, the game market itself and economics. The console market will dictate overall sales and that will define the franchise future. I am not sure "that" market is as concerned by replayability. That may be changing? but in large part for that user base, first impressions are lasting ones and a poor game at launch will kill current and the future economic potential. In that market, there are so many great options now and upcoming for $60+ that I don't feel as motivated here to complain. I know they will have to evolve or die.
I am not so sure that Bethesda understood mass-physicology here of games and gamers. hahahaha, for me and my imagination the people in my mind are great and fun to interact with. That is until real ones show up. Then the perspective changes from inside my mind to what is coming out of their mouths and actions. That can be less than entertaining.
As long as modders can access a creation tool, hopefully, an improved one I have hope for Starfield still. I really like what comes from the Minds-of-Modders. It's a good thing.
With fallout 76, I can forgive many shortcomings. Many-many such as stability, crashes, 21.9, the Atomic store, oh a long list. This is a better-looking game. It is a different game. To me, it is one that on the surface looks and feels like fallout. My problem here is isolated to the lack of soul. They seemed to have only slightly improved on the superficial aspects of the game while simultaneously removing what has made them so special like NPC's, Companions, Autonomy, Imagination of the Community and Story. They removed the idealistic characters and gave me real-people, open microphones and a dependency on folks people that frankly are some of the reason why I play games. Like it or not, unconsciously I am trying to escape those very folks for a time so I can recover from all that real-world interaction. If I want to interact with real people - then I just need to go back to real life. A DON"T put Tarter Sauce on my fish-n-chips kind of thing. I can season it myself with a little salt and vinegar.
Frankly, to me, fallout 76 is like walking up to what is apparently a pretty girl only to have her turn around to find out "oh-good-lord" it is not what you expected. Then run to the optometrist.
I think what I am saying here is a metaphor. "It looks like someone whom I may like, but now that I have spent 30hours alone with them. Well, inside I think they are a bit shallow and just not the (person/game) that I want to have any more of a relationship with other than a very casual one. I don't hate them. I just don't feel any magic. Kind of a thing that is good to know up front." Take it to a movie, buy some popcorn. Just don't sleep with it.
Maybe I should like it more but right now, I am struggling. Spending time with it more out of curiosity than pleasure.
