Energy Scanner not detecting artifact

I've just been trying to use the Energy scanner to get an energy signature from the

Spoiler: Item

Cabot family Artifact/ Crown

but wherever I place the scanner in the cell where it is, I just get the no unknown signature detected message. The owner of the item is dead by the time I have come to try to scan it and I have received the weapon developed from it, I even tried dropping that with him in case it made a difference. The game did crash the 1st time I tried to go down in the lift to the cell with the quest active in case that might have made a difference.
Is this a bug or have I missed something again?

Whoops, worked it out, not a bug.

Spoiler: Solution

You need to equip the weapon, not drop it like some previous items, could have save myself a long walk for that one.
