Question Defenders spawn in? 4.2.0

The latest update is fantastic but i have noticed a random garrison of synth(I'm assuming any random group) defenders will spawn in to help defend Preston & the gang at Sanctuary. I thought they would be easy pickin's but 10 synths spawned in out of no where to help Preston. lol kinda funny but not what i was expecting. So it raises two questions

1. Are spawn-in defenders still happening on top of the *new, already present, settlement guards? I thought this was gone. If so it's going to make taking settlements, at least in my game, VERY difficult.

2. Has anyone else experienced drop-in defenders to help at Sanctuary since 4.2.0? Has anyone noticed this while taking any other settlements?

I've noticed defenders still spawning in, among other weirdness. For example, the first vassal I took (Sunshine Tidings) was guarded by Minutemen, yet Hired Guards still spawned in with their usual kit in addition to the existing defenders. After I took the settlement, the Minutemen spawned in to defend it again and were friendly to me and my raiders. Later, when the Minutemen attacked my HQ, returning to Sunshine resulted in the Minutemen and all the settlers present aggroing to me and my Raiders guarding the place. They could only put each other into a downed state, though, and after a few seconds they'd get back up and continue fighting.

Later, when attacking multiple settlements ostensibly controlled by Rust Devils - at least, according to the flags and the NPCs present (who were fighting with the settlers and the settlement's defenses from the moment the settlement loaded) - Gunners spawned in to defend the place.

Unfortunately, I have no answer for 2, but hopefully someone else does?

Uh

Uh oh, that’s not good haha. I think I’ll launch some test raids tonight and see What happens, maybe there is similar experiences with others.

Ditto for me.
Pre-conquered settlements will spawn in a random faction of additional defenders.

Also, the POW martial plot seems broken in 4.2. I built one at my outpost straight away and have taken over 6 settlements but not a single POW has appeared.

I partially tested this War Options feature at Abernathy. After successfully sniping 3 Gunners, the Workbench indicated my ownership of Abernathy, but not as a Vassal. I will try a vassal assault later today. Combining your comments with my test, I made two suggestions to Kinggath et al, if possible:
  • Correct this ownership situation
  • Have the vassal assault defenders from the same organization as the guards.
As a work-in-progress mod, this feature does add an interesting/desirable aspect to the game.

I feel like that's working as intended? That is to say, I seem to remember KG saying in the patch video that you could take a settlement by sniping the guards and slapping down a War Planner's desk, and you can't do that second part without workshop ownership.

@kinggath
I’m sure this has been noticed, especially if you said something. Having matching spawn in defenders as same as the occupying faction is definitely a must. It makes me really wish I would have used Low Guard ratio. On Medium having 2/3 of total pop as the added settlement guards + spawn in defenders is a ton of guys to get through to take a settlement at this point. Even the lower pop settlements (BLD adds to this for me) we’re looking at what?
2/3 of say a 12 pop settlement is 8 plus the spawn in defenders(of random faction which means they can be considerably harder[synths]) so let’s say another 10. It’s a lot. Especially in the beginning where you have maybe 5-8 warriors. My Children of Atom were straight massacred along with myself lol. I’m obviously going to avoid heavily occupied Gunner settlements or Synth settlements early on, they’re much more challenging, but when I target a low pop-minutemen settlement and then 10 synths spawn in to help them..... :skull:skull.

Tried three more times to make Abernathy a vassal. The first was sniping the Gunner guards and placing a Field Command Center and then a War Planners Desk, separately. In both cases, the only option was to make Abernathy an Outpost, not a Vassal. The second time, Danse and I sniped the guards and then conducted a vassal assault. Had the same problem as game 4 - Danse attacked me. So the last time which was a success, Danse and I sniped the guards and then I did a vassal assault with Dog.

I am using the random ratio. For Abernathy, there were 3 Gunner guards that Danse and I sniped. Then I vassal assaulted Abernathy. It was me, Dog and 7 BoS versus 10 Gunners of mixed level plus 3 of the 6 civilians.

My Children of Atom were straight massacred along with myself lol.
In my previous game, I vassal assaulted Sanctuary and lost 2/3 of my force. After that I manually up-armored and up-gunned my warriors and my losses dropped to 1/3.
