Bug Cannot get Catching a Line to trigger.

Hello, Xbox One player here.

I can't get the main story to progress after 'If I had a Hammer' or whatever the quest is called. I successfully get to the point to check out the commotion, complete that dialogue, and finish the quest, with the implicit goal to go to Concord to talk to the stranger while Old Paul 'helps the newcomers get settled in'.

I go to Concord, and cannot talk to the Stranger. He just walks up and down the stairs in the hardware store and cannot be interacted with at all. Attempting to interact with Old Paul brings up the generic settler trading menu. I've checked other bug reports, got my load order set, tried reverting to a save before the Hammer quest was completed, nothing has worked.

I'm at a level of frustration where I'm going to scrap the playthrough for good. Any suggestions?

@RayBo and myself were discussing this today along with another topic on it in the official bug forums (#427)
Bug - "If I Had a Hammer" completes, but nothing happens after that. | Sim Settlements Forums

Yeah, I read through it but didn't see a solution. Guess I wait.
Yeah unfortunately aint much can do with a console system because you lack the console commands.
Only thing to do would be either rollback to an earlier and try again or wait for a fix.

I HIGHLY recommend creating saves regularly when doing the main quests. Even if you done ti smoothly twice before a molerat could fart or something and give you an issue this time around.

Yeah, I had a save that was pretty much right before finishing the quest, and reverted to that one. I've got plenty of saves to fall back on (despite it being a survival playthrough), but without any assurance it'll fix the issue, I'm hesitant to keep going further and further back.

Honestly, some times it is best to exit the game after having the issue and starting from the last good save.

I think just how long your "current session" is can affect the performance of the script. Like sometimes I will have a scripting go amok but because it CTDs afterwards I can not get it to repeat itself.

I feel your pain, my play time from 1100 hours to 3k hours was all on survival and without mods. Which basically meant no console commands to fix things. I would literally plan out where to save when doing known buggy quests like Cabot House's Emogene.

@KrissyWolf I do appreciate you helping us out and reporting this and sorry you are having an issue. :pardon

I have linked this thread to the other report on the internal support list and moved this report to the bug section.

Can you check if all the prerequisite quests for 'If I had a Hammer' are marked complete in your pipboy?

There are three requirements
1-2. for IND and AG
3. for RES

I think what might be happening is players are able to complete it without finishing all the prerequisite quests, thus causing the next MQ stage to hang.

I did have this same issue and rolled back "this is the only quest in my pipboy that I can't scroll down on" but was able to roll back far enough to see the RES was still showing incomplete as I had too many folks assigned to vanilla beds.

Support Note:

If I had a Hammer "player QOL issue" SS2 v1.0.3 #427
