Building fences

One of the things I really hate is building fences but I still want me settlements protected. Anyone have any thought on best way to build fences?

Once I figured out that the "offscreen settlement attack" calculations do not CARE if you have walls, and if you fast-travel in to help with the defense the enemies can just teleport inside of them anyway, I gave up on even trying to build fortifications - just stick turrets errywhere.

I at least try and place them up out of melee range. Muties like to beat on them. I gave up on walls awhile ago too unless it's a plot design or the settlement really just needs the astetic

Oh, for sure I always put the turrets up on elevated platforms or roofs or something too. Helps the enemies with grenades have trouble oneshotting them too.

I usually install a mod that keeps them from spawning inside the settlement boundaries, Autodoors to trigger gate locks to keep settlers inside then build walls with easy access for shooting from. Its not always perfect but it feels realer.

I have a mod that moves attacks outside the settlement. Will have to consider the fences; just don't won't the hassle really of dealing with them and their maybe-I-will-maybe-I-won't snapping and stuff.

I've found when a settlement starts looking like escape from NY issues with rendering occur. Speaking of Escape from New York does Aiden give anyone else the snake plisken vibe?

What can I say: I like Kurt Russell.:this

I build walls around all my settlements and find they work "reasonable" well most of the time. After that, I place turrets on platforms on the walls and add martial plots. Walls have generally helped at all my settlements in my recent game (#3 as BoS), but really helped at Red Rocket and Starlight. Some of the "bad guys" occasionally spawn inside the walls.

Just had another epic settlement assault at Starlight - walls completely enclose the settlement from the movie screen to the "pond" and have turrets and martial plots (Def 229). Two assaults occurred, the first was about 8 low/mid-level automaton robots outside the wall to the northeast of the "pond" and the second, like the cavalry charging over the hill from the west, were 22 high level synths (I am level 51) versus me, Ada and 14 settlers. Ada went down, I used 6 - 8 stimpaks, lost 1/3 of my X01 MIV armor, 4 visiting NPCs were lost, and 6 heavily armed/armored settlers were lost. Only 1 synth spawned/entered and got trapped between the wall and plot on the west side. What did happen was the synths were shooting down from the higher elevation on the west and were stopped from entering by the walls and plots - cheeky buggers. So I raised the height of the wall on the west.

PS: Listened to KGs video with the latest patch and noted his comment about Conqueror. Can't come soon enough so I can let my personal guards participate and I can watch. :grin

PPS: I am looking forward to the hi-tech martial plot "earning its keep" in these situations.

PPPS:A picture is worth a 1000 words.

My starlight is under a no attack clause from IDEK's but that is a sweet setup. I myself like to use the Covenant walls mods and the Covenant turret stand one as well. I'll use it combo with the BoS barricades, when I do wall something off. And I as well like Kurt Russell

Because I did not have a mid-assault save, I replayed the start of the assault from an older save. This time the synths came from the southwest. Why I like walls.:dance2 In this assault, there appears to be 25 synths.

@Headcrab - for someone who wants more shooting, this was yesterdays synth assault on Starlight.

PS: Julia Powell was on the top of the screen with me when I entered console command tfc 1 to freeze the action and fly around.
