Buffout 4 and crash troubleshooting

Here's a small reminder on Buffout 4 and some related resources that should prove useful. For those you don't know, Buffout 4 is a mod that aims to fix some game engine bugs. It prevents some crashes, expands memory and provides crash logs.

You may want to add the Buffout 4 FAQ to your favorites as a complement to the lackluster description page for the main mod.

More importantly, if you want installation instructions, a list of mods superceded by Buffout 4, a list of mods known to cause crashes and a list of message errors from crash logs with solutions, you will need to refer to How To Install Buffout 4 And Resolve Most Common Crash Logs. Read it carefully. That page is from the same user behind Optimization Guides Collection 2, which has a lot of info on the game and various tweaks and suggestions that could benefit you for modding the game in general.

Once you have Buffout 4 and, eventually, a varying number of crash logs, you can run the Crash Log Auto-Scanner. It will display info on your crash logs.

Finally, if you need help to troubleshoot your crash log AFTER looking at the guide and the auto-scanner above, you can post your crash log to the Posts section of Buffout 4 or the FO4 Buffout Logs section of the Collective Modding Discord Server.

On a side note, because SS2 users may be using that mod, if you run Baka ScrapHeap - Script Memory Limit Expander, you should set MemoryManager to False in Buffout4.toml. Also, if you look at the Bugs section of Buffout 4, please note that those posts are meant to report game engine bugs that could potentially get fixed by Buffout 4 in the future, rather than "proper" bug reports.

That is all. Happy troubleshooting!

Could some kind soul take a look at this crash report and hopefully easily see what the trouble is, if you please?
I was doing the "From Hell" mission and I unlocked several locations surrounding the quest location but every time I go near my quest marker I CTD.

Thank you

Where are you crashing exactly? BGSCombinedCellGeometryDB is pointing to precombines. One of your mods could have rebuilt precombines, and could be causing the crash (perhaps in combination with another mod?).

There's that word again I've been hearing, Precombines! Thanks for taking the time. Southeast of 'police station ruins' and north north east of the 'capsized factory' in the glowing sea is where I need to go but get the CTD every time.
I do have the South of the Sea mod but I've played it in the past with no trouble so IDK

You are a brave soul to attempt to use that mod in your playthrough. It has been know to cause crashes. There are most likely conflicts between SOTS and other mods in your list, or issues from SOTS itself.

From this page: South of The Sea | Will cause crashes all over the place due to many deleted navmeshes and countless other bugs.

A comment from this page: FYI All, this mod conflicts with Sim Settlements 2 and Settlers of the Commonwealth by kristakashi. All of these mods edit glowing sea locations and conflict in FO4Edit.

Interestingly, I have SS2, SOTS and ToTC which all add things all over the place, and I haven't had any crashes from the current and last play though(leveled to 63+ before updating mods mid-playthrough brought that game session to it's knees). Though... there is broken pre-combines or mismatched pre-combines and things of that nature which makes it hard to move though that giant hole in the wall at Atlantic Offices(I also have TMaH which I read did a 'wild' edit there, or something to that effect).

The only things that changed were the plugin order (for the most part as some were left as is for now, but will get shifted around later) and a new graphics card with more memory that the modded game can use at any given time.

I have that also, along with Plutonium + Quantum creatures + the patch for both, DECAY + FGEP + the patch so they work together, Tales of the Commonwealth(ToTC- which adds npcs all over the place), NPCS travel, Super Mutant Redux... and a few more I can't remember right off including quest mods like TMaH, Xanders, etc.,. So far it's been really stable. I wonder if somehow your game save has gotten corrupted? If I update mods mid-game then I'll almost always get a crash, so I hold off on that until I'm ready to start a new game.

The conflicts will not always lead to crashes, but I remember seing a lot of bugs posted on the the mod Bugs tab (now removed since the mod is abandoned), and a lot of warnings against the mod in Discord servers. I have never used South of The Sea myself, so I have no insight on that front.

The possibility of mod upates during the playthrough, or maybe a change in load order, is a valid concern. Also, could we see the plugin load order? I don't think they're shown in order in the crash log.

...plus a bunch of texture mods and other loose files. The Fallout 4 data folder packs out at around 135gb atm. The most VRAM usage I've seen, so far, is around 15gb. Some esp are flagged as esl, though it doesn't show that here.

I forgot to mention this, but there's some INI changes that increase LOD detail farther out, pretty much ultra settings and a 32:9 resolution. There needs to be a few changes load order wise, and some custom patches made. But other than a few invisible talking Institute Synths(gotta stop eventually and figure that one out), and some missing tags here and there for food and other items, no crashes. Which is interesting I know, since before my recent hardware upgrade I was getting a pretty much guaranteed crash 3+ hours into game play. I've logged some instances of around 5 hours with no problems other than the occasional 'lag' due to the how the engine renders shadows(actually drops into the 20's in some areas! and it's really noticeable).

I'm trying to layout a 'template' system with the current application I'm developing which should make modding much easier and more automated. Hopefully, it'll proto-type out by this upcoming weekend if I can dedicate enough time to it.

The game looks like this now...

Errr I wanted to see Pilgrim's LO since they're having the crashes :grin

As far as shadows go, they shouldn't be left on default Ultra settings, because it's just too much for any system to handle, especially in dense urban areas.
Here are some recommandations from Optimization Guides Collection 2:
❖ Shadow Resolution should be set to 1024 or 2048. This is how blocky the shadows look. Due to the shadows being highly taxing, lower values should perform much better.
❖ Shadow Filtering should be set to 2 or 3. This is how blurry the edges of shadows look. Due to the shadows being highly taxing, lower values should perform much better.
❖ Exterior Draw Distance should be set to 3000 or 5000. This is how far you can see all shadows. Values above 8000 will severely degrade performance in almost all cases.
At the very least, I recommend setting the Exterior Draw Distance to about 8000.

Thank you; I am just now modding for the first time and letting MO2 install things. The idea of self-building settlements had me use SS ROTC

Mid playthrough I uninstalled SS2 ROTC and went back to the original version and on top of that I was scrapping the crap out of everything using 'scrap everything' mod. I had no idea what I was doing but i'm learning. Thanks for the lesson!

I see! Did you make a switch from SS2 to SS1? At any rate, as you know now, you should commit to your mods until you're ready for a new start. Easier said than done, I know! I screwed myself a few times by making changes mid playthough.

If you're ready for a new game, don't hesitate to ask for suggestions. You've probably seen the recommandation of Clean my Settlement + Raze my settlement as a safer alternative to Scrap Everything.

Good luck with your new playthrough!

I hadn't heard of Clean my Settlement yet, I've been looking for an alternative to Scrap Everything. I know switching mods mid playthrough is dodgy, but would it work if I swapped over from Scrap Everything to Clean my Settlement?

already experiencing ctd's so if it doesn't help, I'll have to start a new save, I'm only about 25 hours into this one >.>

You don't know how much I appreciate your feedback; it's very reassuring. Thank you.
Yes I did, mid-game, switch from SS2 to SS1, so like you say, next time through I won't do that, in fact I'll probably go back to vanilla settlement building and maybe continue using Idek's logistic stations to run supply lines; it now works without the need for sim settlements. I'll also probably do without SOTS next time as well; I'm tired of all those endless dungeons. Valkyrie seems stable and The machine and her. That's really all the extra content I need. Oh and yes to Clean my Settlement + Raze my settlement; I'm not as OCD about cleanliness today :)
Thanks for the offer to come back on my next playthrough. That won't be for quite some time though, Unless I have a mayor crash that is.
Thanks again!

You shouldn’t uninstall Scrap Everything on your current save. Only do so when setting up a new game. Have you installed Buffout 4 to get crash logs?

I have, but I can't make heads nor tails of it XD

Edit should probably give some more info on what's going on. built the RotC2 city plan for sanctuary, first time traveling back caused ctd whenever I got close.
Used the Workshop Framework remote tools to delete the power grid, could go back to sanctuary. went to Corvega to pick up scrap & going back to sanctuary caused ctd's again. even remote deleting power grid doesn't work (might be because I'm fast traveling this time instead of walking into town). log attached is the last crash I had (outside Corvega, remote delete power grid, fast travel to sanctuary). also gotta note, sometimes I crash on loading the autosave made by fast travel, but loading an older save first then loading the newer save works.
