Black faces with SS2 Visitors

Weidly enough, I only get black faces in the game with SS2 visitors. All other NPCs, vanilla or from Better Settlers, there's no issues. And by the way this is NOT a reload issue, they have black faces even if I close FO4 and start again.

Not all visitors have black faces, it's about half of them, so I think it's some particular scar/makeup/dirt textures (probably from Collection of Textures for the Girls) that's causing a soft incompatibility with SS2. Is there a way to edit SS Visitors in FO4Edit to remove any scars/makeup/dirt and so from them to lessen or eliminate the chance of black face?

This could be a vanilla thing, happens to a lot of NPCs, including companions, and the player character. Appears to happen even without mods (at least, in my experience). I believe the textures don't get loaded in properly? Tends to happen if I hop between save files a lot, especially if I'm reloading saves a lot (say, if I save mid conversation before a speech check, and reload it again). For me, making a separate save, exiting to the main menu, then loading that save fixes it in that instance.

Hmm, apologies, I missed your post where you said it only affects SS2 settlers. I did experience something similar before, and it was a mod conflict. I hope you have some luck fixing it soon, it's very distracting when it happens.

I fixed this. Collections of Textures for the Girls (a fairly popular mod used in Cute Preset as well) cause problems with SS2, not only with visitors but NPCs like Old Paul. There are six specular (_s) textures in the FaceDetails folder that should be 512x512 instead of 1024x1024. They replace vanilla and they can be either removed or resized. Resizing them to 512x512 fixed for me.

The odd time this happened I opened to console, clicked on the npc in question to get the ID, typed slm NPCID, closed console, changed hair to fix face, saved done

This problem you're having is typically caused by reloading game. Either using LooksMenu or relaunching the game can fix it.

But when there are textures with the wrong resolution, the black face issue is permanent until the textures are fixed.

I get the blackface bug in general. I dont think its restricted to SS2 settlers only. Its a loading issue where occasionally Gamebryo starts scenes before textures/data have loaded in correctly or previously loaded cached stuff is corrupt or indexed wrong.

This is the "charm" of Bethesda games I guess

This is pretty nice to have but it also doesnt really explain why this is an intermittent but not a permanent issue for me. I do think it can just be a quick of load ordering/laying on decals that could be solved by having some "waits" in the code

Another possibility might be... if the tint masks are a different size than the associated textures, could possibly cause the tint mask to load improperly, not at all(leaving the face texture in a common 'fake' shadow state- a 'flat' color without gradient tinting), or use a default which is the incorrect tint since it couldn't map, scale or use the tint mask for the current texture? Just winging it a bit...

It's pretty simple, all that's used on a character's face, from the basic face textures to makeups, need to be the same resolution for _d, _n and _s textures. By default it seems to be 1024 for diffuse/normal and 512 for specular. Mods that add 2k or 4k textures changing any aspect of the character's face will be incompatible if they are loaded into a character that has other 1k face textures/makeups, any NPC that loads textures with mismatching resolutions for the face will glitch to brown.

That's why most 2k/4k face texture mods have patches for mods that edit or add face details like LMCC. It's all about using the correct resolution. And for those who uses LooksMenu (PC) it also needs to be set in F4EE.ini (uTintWidth and uTintHeight).
