Question Guards quit plot

No matter what I do, no matter if I place faction guards there or common settlers, they just leave the plot after some time and run around as unemployed settlers or faction guards. I turned off the option to use just faction guards for martial plots but even this does not work. Even common settlers leave the plots and quit their job as guards.

I have sim settlements, conqueror, the minutemen faction mod, Horizon and the unofficial patch for FO4.

Any idea why this happens. It is very bad because I play with vasals that can upgrade their settlements and without guards, happiness is too low to upgrade.

Do they stay assigned once you reassign them and then when you leave the settlement and return they then unassign?

I believe this is one of those things which is still being worked out. At the moment it's normal for guards to become unassigned from martial plots shortly after you arrive in a vassal. The new more specific town gavel options make finding them to manually reassign easier. They should reassign themselves if given time. I'd not seen that it still does the same with civilians but guess it will be todo with the complicated code that allows the system to work even as well as it does.

I have been dealing with this issue myself. It is happening to a "controlled vassal (meaning I have control over the settlement to continue building.)" I am pretty sure my main outpost did it once when the plots upgraded.

At one point I swear the guards actually assigned themselves back to the Military plots on their own. I think that was level 3 plots?

I also think some of the issue is the plots upgrade while you are away and that causes the guards to stop using them.

I am going to pay more attention to see if it happens after the plots reach level 3 and see if the guards remain or reassign.

Once my vassal maxes all the plots to level 3 I am also going to see about turning over control and see if that makes a difference. Although I think "control vassal" is not a local option.

I think some of it might have to do with the fact the AI thinks the Guard Role is already having a job?

Okay, so I visited Red Rocket after being away a few days.

The guards were still assigned to the plots and they were level 3 plots.

I started building and it got dark. The next thing I know all the military plots were unmanned.

Maybe an issue with the idle time script? Vanilla guards are immune to sleeping and idle time. Wandering off to idle might be one of the causes (plot upgrading the other?)

Yep, I left Taffington Boathouse near dark and the guards were fine. I came back to the settlement around the 7pm idle time and they all unassigned themselves.

I find guards un-assign fairly consistently a short time after arriving in a settlement. Usually just after all the settlement data has updated in the HUD. It's been said that if you are patient, they will reassign, but I find that if left to their own devices they sometimes find another job to do instead if any are free.

Yeah. I give up trying to figure out the cause.

I arrive and they are assigned. Then like you said give it a minute and they unassign themselves.

I did have one decide to assign itself to a tato plant..Having a similar issue with the funeral pyre plot where the settler unassigns itself.

So I noticed today guards quitting plots is not just a vassal issue. I had two guards in an outpost and they moved themselves to other plots.

The assignment sticking is a known issue and I appreciate the extra details you've provided. It should help narrow down the problem and get a fix in for it.
I have turned off the 'auto assign roles' for my playthroughs to avoid all of my raiders ending up being workers as they bounce from one plot to the next. It's a bit tedious running an empire when the minions don't do what you want them to! Stupid minions! :)

Well the other thing is the script lag it creates unassigning and reassigning them.

How soon they quit their plots after arrival displays how much backlog of scripts you have. They also quit the plots one by one.

this happens with all my vasals as well, when i arrive at a settlement the guards will be all assigned correctly, but after a while they will one by one get unassigned, waiting long enough (from 8 to 10 minutes) they all get reassigned, but thats quite the absurd amount of time, especially when you are just passing thought a settlement... its actually easier to painfully reassign all guards manually as they usually are right over where they were assigned.

seems like the guard script is just too lazy and takes too long to figure things out? would be great if there was a option to just disable this vassal guard script

Yeah, this is a feature that doesn't seem entirely worked out yet. The guards do certainly do their thing in terms of maintaining control (two guards seems to be a bit of a sweet spot, they almost never get attacked and the happiness level stays pretty on point). I'm starting to wonder from a functional perspective why I should even have those martial plots or more than one martial plot in a vassal. It might make more sense to turn them into ags since I never have enough rations.
