During my last play through, I could not get the Assault Vault 88 Conqueror quest to complete. After digging through these here forums (for the life of me I can't find the thread to link it) someone else posted a similar problem. What they ended up doing was killing the Overseer (who was not hostile) and their quest completed.

During the Vault 88 quests, I ended up pissing off one of the three starter settlers, so she left. The Overseer left too. By the time I scheduled my raid, those two were never to be found and the quest wouldn't complete. I even tried to summon the Overseer via console commands. I even cloned her. But nope.

So, my next time through (I'm a whopping level 11 right now!) I will do two things:
1: Keep the Overseer in the vault.
2: Keep the starter settler in the vault.

The first one may be hard because she's gonna be right pissed off that I did the 'happy' things to keep the other settler from leaving. (I want the happy bonus for the slot machine anyway).

But, I reckon that by having all the NPC's assigned to the Vault still in the vault, I should be able to complete the quest.

FYI: I couldn't find the proper QuestID to trigger its successful completion. Believe me lawdy lawd, I tried.

this is something that i have also been wondering about.
there are 4 settlers
Overseer
Clem
the cynic
and the not jumping into a reactor guy.

which one of these have essential flags?
which ones are not cleaned up by the game properly?
Is it better to just swat the overseer outright and prevent the crew from even spawning?

Or is vault 88 Best left as a vassal?

I'm running a new play through and will let you know if 88 works well as an outpost. I like that idea because it's an instance and hopefully can support a very large build.

i found that there is a issue with vault 88 and i wonder if mechanist lair will be the same.

Namely that it does not project a sphere of control so you cant vassal jamaica plains that next door.
It however does make a great location to move your HQ though since then there wont be random attacks and such interupting jammer/ophelia.

Oh and i found the vault is best taken care of by shooting barstow the moment you see her.
if you don't do the quest to recruit them they wont bug your missions.

Good to know. Not there yet, but I may just do that.
I'd like to have the happy slot machine and soda fountain, but having 88 as an HQ that I can build up to my heart's content may be worth that sacrifice.

I made mechanists lair an Outpost, and it had a sphere of control.
Need to know if vault 88 does, because I'm thinking of using it as an hq.
If it doesn't, then I goes I'll be making Jamaica plains an Outpost, lol.

Hey, I’m about to start vault 88 and I’d like it to be my HQ any tips before I start? Any bugs to still look out for? Thanks .

Conq. Used to break if you completed the quests and any of the settlers or overseer left.
So, skip the quests and kill the overseer right off the bat. Smooth sailing after that.
Note that 88 doesn't tie in supply routes so IDEK or a provisioner is needed.

Thanks for the tip, unfortunately it looks like my Play though is too unstable to play now as it’s crashing pretty consistently. Around once every 10 minutes. I’ve already tried going back to previous saves but if I have to keep doing that I’m never going to get anywhere. I killed the overseer and then went straight back to start the assault, maybe I should’ve cleared it out first? As I couldn’t finish the assault as I couldn’t find all the defenders and whilst clearing it out and unlocking each section it would eventually crash. One thing, if you find a settlement that’s completely empty like Vault 88 shouldn’t there be an option to just simply clean it as an outpost or vessel? It seems silly to have to leave start an assault and suddenly have to fight people who just spawn there.

How complicated of a city plan do you think can be used on a Xbox in the vault? Are the different wings of the vault like the triangles of death?

Vault 88 is one huge cell and I know the ROTC city plan for it had heaps of trouble getting it to work.
for xbox building up that 1st area should be fine ,try building the rotc plan and see how ur system handles that :)

Vault 88 is funky to build in.

No animals are allowed inside (dogs, cats, brahmin, cages, etc.)

The Bunker Hill caravans can get "stuck inside" and never leave again. Happens with the Mechanist Lair as well. I think that got patched and the trade post thingy can not longer be built inside? I just never bothered to try it after reading multiple topics on it. Mostly because by the time you figure out they are stuck inside you would have to roll back a very long ways to fix it.

The "sandbox" is really broken. The sandbox is the area you settlers will walk to their jobs, idle etc. So very rarely you might find them at the two side exits. I trie dusing a few expanded sanbox mods and they did not play very well with SS, so they went away.

Attacks on the vault can "skip your defense." For example you could have a really nice turret set up at the main door.

Yet if you enter the side doors then the game can place the main door attacking mobs past your defenses and into the main cavern. The same basically applies to whichever two exists you did not enter from.

The build amount is going to be a lot more than other areas simply because you have no long distance to draw or adjacent cells, etc. I got my vault up to almost 200 food production with vanilla. I did a Fallout Shelter style main room.

I have never had an issue creating supply routes. However the brahmin will never be seen inside. I usually used sentry bots. Maybe you had a outpost/vassal supply route issue?

Used to be great watching my 3 sentry bot provisioners (Spectacle, Warwick, and Vault 88) meet up in Quincy

Playing as Minutemen Liberator, and have the Castle as my HQ and Jamaican Plains as an Outpost. Again, thanks to @1ae0bfb8 whose suggested mod stopped my game save freeze problem and allowed me to explore/clean Vault 88. And then I read this thread.

Currently, I have the four settlers (Overseer, Clem, the cynic and "not jumping into the reactor" guy), and performed the exercise bike subquest. I have also placed a War Planners Desk to make Vault 88 an Outpost, because the Castle assault board did not show Vault 88 as a vassal candidate. However, Vault 88 is not connected to the rest of the resources network. Appreciate your comments regarding the following:
  1. Can I just ignore the Overseers quests from this point without creating any problems?
  2. Having placed the War Planners Desk, if I add IDEK's Logistics Station to both Vault 88 and Jamaican Plains will this complete the resources network? EDIT - I have placed IDEKs mod and everything is working as it should for the moment.
As always, thank you for your assistance.

You may be able to complete the Overseer's quests with Vault 88 as an outpost. I never tried that. How is it going for you?

How is it going for you?

After 1ae0bfb8's mod suggestion, it is going reasonably well with no problems so far:
  • placed the War Planners Desk and made Vault 88 an Outpost
  • moved the Overseer/her desk and Clem/his bike to the other side of the room
  • added a IDEK Logistics Station at the Vault and Jamaican Plains, and now all the resources are fully shared with the vault
  • turned off the settlers beacon
  • transferred 8 warriors to the vault
  • built a vault/outpost type settlement - all my builds look like barracks, however, after some comments by @Bored Peon, will not be using residential plots (Side Note: several of my Level 3 prebuilts have annoying levels of stuttering which hopefully can be reduced by turning off visitors and limiting residential plots.)
After finishing the Nuka World and the Automatron quests, I will try the Overseer's quests.
