Community Feedback Request: What SS2 content is the most (in-universe) newsworthy?

Hello everybody, Kefke here from the Sim Settlements writing team,

As a lot of you probably know, the "New Bugle" newspaper plot was originally made for Sim Settlements 1, and like a lot of content, migrated up to Sim Settlements 2. As a result, while the articles the paper publishes cover a variety of quests in the base game, there haven't been any articles for the slew of new quests added in Sim Settlements 2, because none of that content existed at the time the original articles were written.

We're currently working to change that, and add in new articles that will cover SS2-specific events. We want to be able to cover things happening in the Commonwealth that the people living there would care about. That's where you can help! Just reply to this thread with anything that you think would be notable enough to make it into the newspaper. Or even just things were you'd like to hear what the people of the Commonwealth think of your antics. I can't promise we'll use every suggestion given, and some articles are already written, but hearing what you think are the most interesting quests and events will still help in determining what would be news to the Commonwealth at large.

Much thanks, and we hope everyone continues enjoying the mod!

How about turning the nuclear power generator under Concord back on? That would seem newsworthy. Or maybe the trading between settlements getting to an all time high? Settlement attacks becoming more prevalent? A Mayor's convention? On the lighter side, how about a new business opening up in the Commonwealth. The "Mister Handsy's Brahmin Handling Company (Abraxo not included)"?

My vote is on a commercial for THE RON.

Thats very much an obvious one though. A fair portion of the other quests (both Jake's and the Unique Settlers) dont really make sense to be in the newspaper though. Maybe for the Unique Settlers, only the ones that unlock new plot subtypes due to the reporter getting excited about the breakthrough in farming or whatever?

Hmm, maybe not an article about the quest, but what about an interview with the unique settler? Give you even more of an opportunity to get some backstory about some of these characters out there? Or, even more hilariously - what about an op-ed by one of the unique settlers? Some of them have got some thoughts on things.

I would love you to run a series on the character I have created with my settlement building that of the Raider boss Karvoc.

Thats a good one too. Could do that for the mandatory story ones too - still bugs me how Old Paul seems to completely change personality for half of one scene with a personality trait never otherwise brought up.

One issue here though is how long it takes to tech up to even having the option of making that Newspaper plot; I have only even seen it ingame in SS2 on saves I used the cheats on, typically barely even have Conversion subclass unlocked by the end of Chapter 1 and thats with knowing what Im doing to get there. Long since past when anything before about level 20 is relevant news.

I personally love to write (and edit, thus I am one of the SS2 wiki editors) but I've not delved into the nitty gritty of all that is SS2 as of yet ... /sigh RL so I haven't gotten to much of the stuff that might spark a story idea. Not yet anyway. What I'd like to do is offer to look over people's copy, discuss story ideas that are being seriously looked at, and help to flesh it out; editing, flourishes or whatever might be needed. I'm like a ghost writer you might say heh. So tossing my name in the hat. You need help with your writing, I'm your gal!

Yeah, this is my chance! They are not exactly SS2 events but someone should report this

1- I think it is necessary for someone to post something to warn the victims.
I demand my money back!
Life is hard in the wasteland and Archibald is a scammer or senile.

I sold Mama Murphy to the Institute so I could pay for this sculpture sh**. He is called The Thinker. All the settlers are laughing at me, Dogmeat included.

2- The settlers protest, the situation is not bad enough to get to this
The economy of my settlement is not very good, so I had to buy an inexpensive water treatment plant from a Vault-Tek representative, but...

3- Is it revenge? Hidden message? Is there a story behind this?
Junk Town Two @uituit
Some Bloatflies are named after forum users. Why?
I hope a good article on this

4- Relationship between artists and drugs. They deny it, of course.
What is this? What is this? :grin
ScreenShot630.png

@pra I have to ask the authors not to take drugs while working

5- Cat soup, idea rejected. The settlers are hungry. I want a good article on this explaining why.
Why can't I make cat soup? Compulsively crying in a corner
I want to make Cat Soup!

6- This doesn't look like an accident, is someone looking into it?
I'm beginning to think that the abuse of uncontrolled substances while at work is common among authors

Sensitive refrain from clicking images

7- Why? Why? Why?
I take my job as mayor very seriously, but I have to protest the construction plans. Why are the limits not respected? I would like to know if this individual has already been arrested. I haven't seen anything in the obituaries

8- Double life. Jack doesn't wear clothes at night ... I doubt this man is the solution to our problems. Is anyone looking into this? Was it a drunken night?

9- Mama Murphy is back on drugs. Is nobody going to put a solution?
Unfortunately at level 1 the double bunks look like an opium den and Mama Murphy has turned to drugs.

10- There is a disturbed on the SS2 team. It seems that someone tries to hide this, I hope some reporter echoes this.
Here is the proof!

Some of those are Addon Pack specific... although thats a good point, Addon Packs seem to barely inject more articles. Might have to re-read the procedure for that myself...

My add-on has two articles that inject when Creation Club content is completed that adds new plots. I always planned to add more about some of the creation club quests and describing what went down.

Also a great one would be for "Who Can? ASAM!" - maybe an article about the founding of the new settlement and it could differ based on who is chosen to be the Mayor - maybe have a few quotes in the article from them to give more weight to the player's decision.

I disagree on including 'Where There's Smoke';

After that quest —
Jake is shaken up and the only thing on his mind after that, as quest progress shows, is to immediately go to his radio to try and warn his daughter from coming to the Commonwealth ('Memory Lane').

He doesn't wish to make it newsworthy, so as to not draw mass fear into settlers, so he would at least keep it to himself until he has a plan.
This is further evident during the last parts of 'Memory Lane', where Jake begins totally against the idea of continuing to hand out ASAMs.

I'd say that whole quest would be something the Sole Survivor and Jake would keep private. Until perhaps after they have a plan - in which case - it wouldn't be 'Who There's Smoke' timeline anyhow.

On the other hand, it DOES warrant news for the settlers as its big trouble, but I think in this instance, since it was just the one
small, side, settlement that was attacked
Jake might keep it to himself, as there aren't any strong links for settlers to figure out that it was because of the ASAMs, and he would rather avoid the chaos of panic, by keeping it to himself for now, especially if it's potentially due to a huge mistake on his part. And would only address the issue if or when he has come up with a solution to the
Gunner problem.

I don't know that whether Jake deciding on whether it is newsworthy or not matters - but you raise an interesting point. Do Jake and the Sole Survivor get editorial veto over the New Bugle articles? Would they be able to stop the New Bugle from putting out a story? That's an interesting question - are they a propaganda-driven, "state" controlled media or an independent newspaper? That said -

The settlers at Tenpines Bluff would have likely seen the attack on the settlement and the ensuing firefight between the Gunners, Jake, Aiden, and the Sole Survivor. Would they just be told to shut their mouths and not say anything? Again, do Jake and the Sole Survivor have dictatorial powers that would prevent anyone from freely speaking about attacks they witness? Did no one at Tenpines know these people who were so close by?

I would love to see an article about MALA, the mysterious new robot hitting the tough streets of Concord and dispensing some wasteland justice. I would be more than happy to write it! I'm also happy to offer my services as a copyeditor! Writing and editing are big parts of my real-world life :)

An advertisement for Franklin's Galactic Emporium perhaps?
Or something about hi-tech water plants (Warwick's place somehow smells even worse now? Or maybe it's better, but the settlers still don't trust that thing... In other news, Jenny Warwick got killed by raiders but no one seems to care... What if the whole family is secretly synths? I know it sounds crazy but...)?
Or new chem lab opening up (citizens of the really lucky to survive a direct bomb hit Coastal Cottege/Croup Manor/Taffington and neighboring settlements now have a steady supply of Daddy-O and X-Cell to forget the fact they live in a hellhole! Oh and don't forget Daytripper)?
Maybe something that berates Preston Garvey for overrecruiting useless minutemen who couldn't defend their own settlement (those guys lost a castle to mirelurks after all. MIRELURKS)?
Or how about the fact the local mayor tries really hard to turn his little town into industrial hell but the locals still love the place no matter what? They just really enjoy sitting at a bar table and watching the coast while sharing the local brewed beer.
Orr this one crazy doctor in Jamaica Plain working with a settler in a green hat to revive the ghoul population while insisting that they're harmless after you stuff a whole clinic worth of chems in them?
And an advertisement for April Li's dog store... Dogs make great pillows!
Sorry, there's just too much cool stuff to list.
Read a thing about the power plant, not sure if it was the Concord reactor or the advanced/high tech plant. Either way, great job on writing the articles. Love them!
