Just starting out, trying to edit existing items in game.

I just started and can tend to catch on quick. I did the usual make your first custom container just to get a feel for it for when i start making add on packs and builds to hopefully be a part of this amazing mod but I have run into a stopping point. I tried for several hours to look up guides or just figure it out myself. At the risk of showing my starting point with modding, gimp, and nif I finally give up and just need to ask. I was trying to take the vault locker that is in static and edit the door off. I used it to make the custom container by just putting 4 different heavy weapons in it for heavy weapon storage. I wanted the door off so i could use it as a stand alone if I want to use it as a decoration for a Hunters type of home. I loaded the dds into gimp and tried to go about figuring out how to take the door off but just kept deleting the entire layer. I tried loading it in nif and seeing if i could just make the door to where you couldn't see it but again just ended up deleting the entire locker. I apologize for how long this post is I tend to give too many details but my question, can I even do what I'm trying to do with taking an item and editing one part of it like taking that door off to have just an open locker? Am I trying in the right programs?

What you are trying to do might not be exactly beginner level, which means it requires patience and looking up different tutorials in order to get an understanding for how Fallout 4 handles meshes, material files and textures and what the difference is between them. For this I recommend going through the Bethesda Mod School series by kinggath

For the specifics of cutting apart a mesh (removing your vault locker door), this can't be done in Nifskope (can only be done for meshes that already are made up of parts). You would need a 3D program such as Blender or preferably 3d Studio Max 2013 since that can accurately export collision for Fallout 4. For what you want to do though, you can actually use Outfit Studio - since this program can manipulate vertices (the elements that make up a mesh). This tutorial shows how to cut away parts of a mesh - and it works for statics as well as armor:

Thank you so much for the reply. I’m currently going through kinggath’s videos and any other tutorial I can find and have downloaded many of the programs that I can such as blender and outfit studio to make things easier on me so I’m just going to continue not letting myself give up because even making something as small as finally having an explosives container I wanted made my day so I’m all in at this point. I’ll make sure to check out that video you linked! First thing I did was look her up along with kinggath just haven’t started watching hers yet. Again thank you for the reply!!

Awesome! :)
You could make an explosives container that dynamically shows what you have stored - if you have Workshop Framework as a master for your mod. This tutorial shows how:

I apologize for having to ask more questions. I have screenshots to show everything just in case but i made a custom container shelf, i like the simplicity of things so i just wanted a shelf with both types of shotguns on it for my shotguns storage. I did get it to where it would go on the wall after watching kinggaths video and tinkering with it a bit since its different models and such so its at least on the all but its sunken into the wall. Its about halfway in halfway out and no matter how much i move the snap points or recalculate it in the creation kit with a pivot dummy it stays in the wall. Where I have it now is the best I've been able to get it but it would be nice if I understood what it is I'm doing wrong so I don't have to resort to using place anywhere just to make it look right. I wouldn't ask but I've been working on this for a while now and just can't seem to understand what I'm doing wrong.

Sorry for the late answer! If you haven't looked at them already (or already know all of this), the two Bethesda Mod School Tutorials on snap points (Nifskope 101 and 102) could be helpful. Snap points can be very finicky though, and it makes a difference what type they are.

Yes actually I just today figured out what I was doing wrong and other than not being able to be able to take off the locker door with outfit studio bc the image goes everywhere when i put it into the creation kit I have figured out most of my problems. I finally figured out what I was doing wrong with 3 different items I had done so thank you so much for helping! Day by day I’m getting there.

I recently had the same problem with Outfit Studio and cutting up a static mesh - big artefacts all over the cell screen in the creation kit. It might depend on the type of mesh - perhaps some really need a 3D program such as Blender or 3D studio max :(

Glad to see you are coming along!
